THE ROLE

 

We are seeking an experienced WINTEL and VDI Engineer to provide specialist L3 engineering support across enterprise virtualisation, Windows Server, backup, storage, and collaboration services. This role is ideal for a technically confident engineer with strong VMware, Microsoft infrastructure, and operational support experience in complex, resilient environments. 

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Deliver engineering support for WINTEL and VDI environments, including VMware ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, NSX, and Horizon. 

  • Support highly available, resilient infrastructure across clustered and cross-site environments.

  • Manage and maintain Microsoft Windows Server platforms, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, NTFS permissions, PKI, and related services.

  • Support backup, replication, storage, and disaster recovery technologies, including Veeam Backup and Replication and SAN configurations.

  • Provide operational support using service management tooling such as Remedy.

  • Contribute to secure desktop, application, and virtual client deployment strategies, including Windows 10, AppVolumes, AppStacks, and thin or zero client environments. 

 

This is a fixed-term contract opportunity with expected dates from 21 September 2026 to 31 March 2028, with potential for the contract to be extended beyond the initial term. 

 

THE PERSON 

 

Required skills and experience  

  • Strong experience with VMware ESXi, including Distributed Virtual Switches, Distributed Resource Scheduler, and Distributed Power Manager. 

  • Hands-on knowledge of VMware vSAN, including hybrid and all-flash storage configurations. 

  • Experience with VMware vCenter, high availability, clustering, and cross-site failure and resilience. 

  • Understanding of VMware NSX, micro-segmentation, and distributed firewalling. 

  • Experience with VMware Horizon, AppVolumes, AppStacks, and virtual desktop deployment approaches. 

  • Strong Microsoft Windows Server experience, including Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2022 Core. 

  • Working knowledge of PowerShell, WSUS, Windows 10 deployment, SQL Server, Exchange Server, and Skype for Business. 

  • Experience supporting voice and video conferencing technologies, including SIP with TLS federation. 

  • Knowledge of database services, including Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL. 

 

Due to the nature of elements of the role, the successful applicant must be a UK National and may be required to successfully complete National Security Vetting which may require criminal record, security service and credit reference checks; qualification will also normally require a minimum UK residency of at least 5 years.
