Location:

Lincoln, England, United Kingdom

Role Type:  Permanent – Full Time

THE COMPANY

We are a highly innovative and rapidly growing defence and technology company that design, develop, and deliver some of the world’s most advanced defence related training, products, and services.

We were recently crowned Employer of the Year at the British Ex-Forces in Business Awards 2023. We have been listed as one of the ‘100 Best Large Companies to Work For’ in the UK and Midlands by Best Companies several times as well as achieving ‘Best Companies 3 Star Accreditation’ and a rating of ‘world-class’ for our employee engagement on a number of occasions.  We are also proud to have been honoured with two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation, for our next-generation GECO military mission planning system.

As part of a unique and specialist defence company, our friendly team consists of experienced and highly capable individuals, working together with a mature ‘can do’ work ethic. Our central business functions are located in an easily accessible, bright and modern head office to the west of Lincoln, alongside our mission systems team, while the majority of our operational specialists are embedded alongside our Defence customers.

THE ROLE

Our award-winning Mission Systems Team deliver some of the world’s most advanced aviation IT systems from our office in Lincoln.  As a result of our continued success and business expansion, we are delighted to offer an opportunity for a Systems Engineer specialising in IT configuration, hardware integration and system build to support the development, test and delivery of our bespoke mission system products.

The Mission Systems Team operates using Agile methodologies to develop our electronic mapping, mission support and electronic flight bag solutions. We require an engineer who enjoys hands-on work with COTS hardware, building reliable, repeatable and fully tested systems that meet strict engineering, configuration control and security standards.

As a Systems Engineer (IT Configuration and Build), you will form part of a multi-discipline team, supporting the full product development cycle. You will be responsible for taking commercially available hardware devices and configuring them using defined scripts, MDM tooling, and deployment processes, into fully functional mission systems. You will validate and document each build to strict engineering standards, ensuring each system is repeatable, supportable and compliant with technical and security baselines. This is not a desktop support role. It focuses on systematic configuration, controlled hardware build processes, and engineering test activity as part of a product development lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The main duties of the role will include:

  • Contributing directly to the systems engineering aspects of Company-designed electronic mapping, mission support and electronic flight bag products, including the hands-on configuration, build and test of hardware systems.
  • Defining, maintaining and improving system configurations, build scripts and deployment processes to ensure reliable, repeatable system builds.
  • Building and validating Windows and Android-based devices using standardised deployment tooling (e.g., WDS, MDM platforms, configuration scripts).
  • Conducting structured functional and integration testing to ensure systems are correctly configured, connected and performing to specification.
  • Maintaining configuration control, versioning, documentation and test evidence associated with each system build.
  • Reviewing the configuration and build work of others to ensure consistent quality and compliance with engineering standards.
  • Undertaking related engineering and project activities as required to support system release, delivery and sustainment.

The role is expected to grow with experience. Further development of the role is possible. Support and mentoring will be provided with the short-term goals to allow the successful candidate to be able to:

  • Deliver consistent, repeatable system builds.
  • Maintain and improve build scripts and configuration documentation.
  • Independently test and prepare documentation for release activities.
  • Contribute to process improvement and automation.

This role is based in the Company Offices in Lincoln; remote working is available where tasking allows - applicants should assume that they may be required to work in the office full-time most weeks.

THE PERSON

We are looking for a proactive, flexible and confident individual with strong attention to detail and the discipline to produce accurate, repeatable work. You should be motivated by delivering high-quality technical outputs and committed to following engineering processes, build standards and configuration control practices.

As a member of a small highly skilled team, the responsibilities of the role will necessarily be broad and varied and you should be prepared to assume a comprehensive range of responsibilities, be capable of working with minimum supervision, be confident enough to contribute your own suggestions and ideas and have a ‘can do’ attitude as you will be required to take a flexible, constructive and timely approach to meeting the diverse needs of the Company’s business.

You will also have an inquisitive/analytical mind, be able to research issues independently, identify root causes and suggest pragmatic, business-focused solutions. We are keen to support candidates who demonstrate a desire to develop professionally and contribute to the continuous improvement of our build and test capability.

 QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Evidence of the following would be considered essential:

  • A methodical, disciplined approach to work and excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong experience using modern office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).
  • A good understanding of modern operating systems (Microsoft Windows and Android).
  • A clear understanding of configuration control principles and repeatable build processes.
  • A clear understanding of the concepts of Windows Deployment Services and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT).
  • A demonstrable understanding of the concepts of Mobile Device Management (MDM) and MDM tools.

Evidence of any of the following would be considered desirable:

  • Familiarity with Systems and Software Engineering Lifecycles, interface and integration.
  • Working knowledge of Requirements, Architecture and Verification.
  • Experience in using Configuration Management tools (e.g., Tortoise SVN, Git).
  • Knowledge of the principles of the development of systems for safety related systems (RTCA/DO-178C, DO-200B, DO-254, IEC61508).
  • Hands-on experience building, configuring or deploying commercial-off-the-shelf hardware systems in a controlled environment.
  • Experience using MDT and/or MDM and maintaining or updating configuration scripts.
  • Experience with basic network design, configuration and troubleshooting, including the use of virtual machines (VMs) to simulate networked environments for testing, integration or build validation.

Evidence of any of the following would be considered highly desirable:

  • Expert use of Windows Deployment Services.
  • Expert-level experience with Mobile Device Management solutions.
  • Strong experience deploying or configuring Android-based systems.
  • Experience with automation or DevOps concepts (e.g., scripting, CI tooling, deployment automation).

Due to the nature of elements of the role, the successful applicant must be a UK National and may be required to successfully complete National Security Vetting which may require criminal record, security service and credit reference checks; qualification will also normally require a minimum UK residency of at least 5 years.
