About the role

We are currently recruiting a Head of Engineering to join QinetiQ Target Systems (QTS) within our Engineering Team. QTS is a wholly owned subsidiary of QinetiQ Group PLC specialising in the design and manufacture of a range of state of the art Unmanned Aerial and Surface Target systems including the world leading Banshee target.

 

QTS targets are used to enable realistic weapons test and evaluation and operator training in over 40 countries worldwide with QTS providing a complete managed service in over 15 of these countries.

 

 

What will I be doing?

Reporting to the Vice President / Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for the day to day leadership of all UK based Engineering activity, establishing and maintaining appropriate and consistent standards of engineering and execution excellence in all Engineering department activities across product development and product delivery with the goal of helping to expand QTS business lines, revenue and profitability. With a team of ~50 people, you must be a strong people leader capable of building high levels of employee engagement along with change management skills to help take the company to the next stage of its development.

 

Duties will include:

 

  • Day to day Leadership of all UK Engineering based activities including line management of the engineering department

  • Ensure that Engineering activities are delivered in line with appropriate processes and meet QTS & customer quality, safety and airworthiness expectations

  • Prioritisation of Engineering tasks in line with business strategy

  • Budgetary responsibility for all Engineering work - ensuring time and cost requirements are met. Ensure customer milestones are delivered to support revenue generation

  • Take a lead role in execution excellence and continuous improvement activities across QTS working alongside other senior leaders to improve the efficiency and productivity of the business. Embed key measures for Engineering. Improve the depth of quality in the Engineering Function

  • Work closely with the Director of Engineering and senior leaders in QTS Canada to align processes and strategy and improve collaboration between the two sites. Increase quality, capability and efficiency. Be an ambassador for change and collaboration

  • Contribute to the development of the Engineering and product strategies for QTS to support the future growth of the business

  • Accountable for the delivery of a portfolio of small Engineering Development Projects, managed within the department

 

Occasional international travel to support worldwide operations may be required

 

 

What do I need?

 

You will be degree qualified in a relevant field and have broad experience of engineering in a similar environment. Chartered Engineer status is highly desirable.

 

You’ll also have extensive leadership experience and programme / project management experience. Experience in an airframe design environment would be an advantage.
