QinetiQ's Secure Communications and Network Group are renowned for providing high quality, independent technical advice to the MOD in support of many of their major procurement programmes.  We are seeking Communications Engineers to join our military communications consultancy business for roles based at Bristol and Malvern.


Working to help our clients deliver major UK communications and information systems, you will use your technical knowhow and skills to advise, formulate and de-risk procurement options.  You will have leadership, analytical and communication skills to engage directly with clients, stakeholders, senior management and industry.  To gather information and shape views using technical evidence, analysis and sound judgement. Communicating concisely in written and verbal form.


Role / Responsibilities:


As Principal Engineer you will engage with relevant customers and stakeholders and report to the Project Manager on progress, to ensure the requirements of work packages are delivered in the allocated timescales.  It is anticipated that the role will be varied and provide support to a range of programmes, including the next generation of Battlefield and Tactical Communication & Information Systems.  With programmes at various phases of the CADMID lifecycle. This role is to provide technical consultancy in-line with the projects current phase.  


You will be involved in:

  • Designing systems that take into account limitations posed by Tactical RF networking.
  • Breaking down complex decisions into manageable components that can be analysed.  Supported by knowledge of multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and methods for handling risk and uncertainty.
  • Supporting experimentations and concept demonstrations to EXPLORE and progress the maturity of technologies at a low technical readiness level.
  • Developing sound concept designs within the constraints of requirements and defined architectures.


Typical examples of outputs include;

  • Providing advice and support to internal and external agencies on tactical RF networks.
  • Producing technical analysis reports.
  • Producing Electronic Warfare Impact reports.
  • Tactical RF System Design Concepts.


The Fit:


The ideal candidate is a chartered engineer holding an engineering or science degree, with more than ten years' experience of communications systems and architectures.  With a background in system engineering, the applicant will have experience covering; System Design, Integration, Systems modelling, Requirements management, User Capability needs analysis, Integrated Logistic Support and Security.  Additionally domain knowledge must include at least one of the following; Line of Site, Beyond Line of Site or wireless/mobile communication technologies.


The role requires analytical appreciation of business, user and capability drivers, such as Whole Life Costing, equipment scaling, risk and performance.  The Engineer will apply system-engineering methodology to create, develop, and manage Tactical RF system documentation.  Assessing and integrating ideas and advice from other subject matter experts to provide balanced, independent and robust recommendations.  Influencing the strategy or design as appropriate.  Undertake technical studies and coherent programmes of work to enable industry to define, de-risk and explore technical solutions and options. The role requires a dynamic individual with strong technical expertise to be responsible for successfully applying technical knowledge and innovation to the development of current and future military-specific communications systems. You will have experience/knowledge within a number of the following:


  • Radio / RF technologies and capabilities
  • Software defined radios 
  • Waveforms and protocols, able to determine the benefits of each.
  • In-service tactical communications systems.
  • RF Electronic Warfare and Counter-Measures.
  • Influencing technology roadmaps.
  • Conducting technical evaluations of industry proposals.
  • Conducting User Capability needs analysis.


Due to the nature of the work, you must be eligible for high level security clearance.
