Power Sources Test and Evaluation Engineer

There has been a huge upsurge in interest in power source technology world-wide as Governments set out their carbon emissions targets and with the rapid adoption of electric vehicles by the public. UK MOD has set out its aim to reduce emissions and scale up the transition to renewables by 2050 and this is now driving substantial changes to its approach to electrification of the battlefield.

QinetiQ has delivered technical support for MOD’s battery needs for more than 30 years and we work very closely with the responsible teams within the three services. Now that these needs will be undergoing big changes the team is growing to meet this new challenge. We currently offer testing, advice and R&D services and we have a battery test and assessment centre, which is undergoing an extensive programme of upgrade and modernisation. We test all types of batteries from AA cells to tank batteries and this includes both manufacturer and abuse conditions testing as well as forensic investigations.

Working in a team of electrical and mechanical engineers testing in-service and future batteries and power sources the successful applicant will be delivering Battery Test programmes in our facility in Farnborough. You will be experienced with a broad range of electronics and electrical equipment, instrumentation and control systems including power electronics and environmental test systems.


Main role

  • Delivering our customer programmes, including cell testing to appropriate standards, and destructive testing in our hazardous test laboratory.
  • Be part of our customer trials, including off-site, and reporting
  • Support customer visits and demonstrations
  • Support maintenance of the facility – calibration, repairs, health & safety activities


The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work “hands-on” in a facility and within a small team. Other requirements for the role include:

  • Experience of electrical test systems
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and data acquisition
  • Familiarity with safe systems of work and Health and Safety practices relevant to an electrical engineering facility
  • Willingness to regularly travel to our other site at Sevenoaks, Kent until the facility transition to Farnborough is complete.


The successful candidate will possess a Degree or similar in Electronics or Electrical Engineering with a keen interest Battery technology and/or electrical and environmental testing. You will be highly self-motivated and adaptable and will also demonstrate the ability to work with team members to ensure that we continue to delight our customers.
