Team Leader Survivability

The job holder will work in the Weapons Science group. Our teams are critical to providing advice and the assessment of platforms and weapons systems from long range missiles to small arms and defensive aids systems. They help our customers ensure that their critical assets perform effectively and enable our Armed Services to fulfil their roles safely.
This is a key role and the job holder will lead the Survivability team of technical specialists. The Survivability Team provides platform and building protection expertise spanning a broad range of technologies including; threat sensing and countermeasures, defensive aids systems, armour systems, vehicle stopping technologies as well as maritime survivability modelling and building structural assessments.
This role is responsible for the line management and discipline development for a team of 8-15 engineers ranging from graduates through to senior principals. It is expected that this will be approx. 20-30% of the role The role will lead the development of the competency of their team in line with individual development needs and business requirements. 
The role will require a good technical knowledge of at least one of the areas detailed above and can be based at either our Farnborough or Rosyth sites as well as some working from home if required.

 

Key Accountabilities
1.    Responsible for developing capability in their team.
2.    Ensure that customers’ requirements and tasks are fully understood and that problems and issues are reliably identified at the outset. Take a proactive approach to Customer relationships.
3.    Provide support to the Bid Managers and Solution Leads in the construction of work programmes, including their costing and scheduling.
4.    To be aware of project demands on staff and to work with Project Managers and Sales teams and resource managers to assist with the full deployment of their Team.
5.    Encourage an open and honest business assurance culture, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
6.    Demonstrate a good understanding of the various technical areas covered by the Survivability team.
7.    Ensure regular communications and updates from and between team members to enable cross fertilisation of knowledge and business intelligence and also to ensure their wellbeing.


Key Capabilities/Knowledge
1.    Robust understanding and experience of survivability aspects especially regarding land and maritime platforms and dismounted troops.
2.    Ability to challenge poor behaviours and make corrective changes in their team and across other teams. Demonstrate good interpersonal, influencing, analytical and team working skills.
3.    Exhibit good listening and questioning skills to fully understand customers’ requirements and problems.
4.    Must be able to exchange ideas and information effectively in a concise and logical way, and be sensitive to audience diversity.
5.    Personal resilience to handle competing demands and setbacks, proactively anticipates possible problems and using own judgement and initiative derives a range of possible solutions to reach a cost effective outcome.
6.    A strong ethos on the importance of safety, operational efficiency and project delivery.
7.    Ability to quickly understand the broad and diverse technical domains that their team supports and the implications to the development and sustainment of capability.

 

Experience & Qualifications
1.    A suitably-recognised physical science or engineering qualification at a degree level or an equivalent, nationally recognised, professional qualification, with typically 6-8 years of further on the job experience.
2.    Technical experience in one or more areas of Survivability such as optical sensing and countermeasures, defensive aids systems, armour, vehicle stopping systems or weapons effects on structures. Applicants from other relevant engineering areas would also be considered.
