Technical Architect (Network)

High Level core competencies:

  • Experienced Architect - +2 years in IT.
  • Excellent experience in Cisco LAN & WAN technologies and hardware.
  • Working knowledge of Switching, Routing.
  • Working Knowledge of Networking management toolsets
  • Experience & /or understanding of Wireless, Video Conferencing, Collaboration, Security appliances.
  • An Understanding of IT Security Standards
  • Experience in various Networking technologies ISDN, Circuits, Voice, Windows Server, DHCP,TCP/IP
  • Has Trouble shooting experience with complex networks.


TA Operating Principles:

  • Owns the full End-2-End technical solution
  • Ensures the solution meets the Business Requirements via testing.
  • Ensures that the technical design is secure at all times and does not impact the security of any other systems or process
  • Ensures Building block methodology (integration with standards and patterns) and Governance for any non-standard design components.
  • Monitoring & Management conforms to the QinetiQ Standard
  • Design custom by exception
  • Is aware of all capacity & demand management related to their domain
  • Support EA's in the development of Technology roadmaps and strategies.
  • Is a trust advisor to Engineering / Delivery teams


The role of the QinetiQ Technical Architect is to support business change during the full life cycle of a service, working with IT colleagues and the wider business to understand scope and needs. Provides Standards & Low Level Designs for IT services based on approved policies and roadmaps, including oversight and technical assurance for services during delivery.


Key Accountability:

  • Stakeholder management:  Being a trusted adviser.
  • Work with EA's & BA's to ensure that the Business Requirements and processes of a Service are documented, ensuring alignment during Solution development and through into Production.
  • Strong security focus is required for all designs.
  • Defining and articulating complex designs for large scale / high impact projects, including business, application, data and infrastructure impacts along with testing and implementation considerations through a TOGAF based framework.
  • Team player in a multi-disciplinary team of application, data and infrastructure professionals to implement designs, including those distributed across geographical boundaries.
  • Provide trusted consultation to Engineers, QinetiQ and its subsidiaries, for defining or shaping technical solutions that are aligned to approved Strategies and building blocks.
  • Is the responsible owner of all Technical Debt within their domain and reporting it to the EA.


Key Capabilities/Knowledge:

  • Uses appropriate tools, including logical models (UML) of components and interfaces, to contribute to the development of systems architectures in specific business or functional areas including the detailed component specifications and translates these into designs for implementation using building block methodology.
  • Supports business change programmes in the preparation of scoping, transformation, strategies , policies & standards,  cooperating with business assurance and project staff to ensure End-2-End delivery of a project.
  • Takes the time and responsibility to understand Solutions, their requirements and work with the Solution Architects and Enterprise Architects, to shape successful solutions and help define long term strategies.
  • Can articulate clearly between the business and technical views presenting the right information for the audience.
  • Can demonstrate a knowledge of various Technologies, and provides expert advice regarding their application.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • CCNA equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge and practical application experience with SNMPc
  • Knowledge and practical application experience with Scrutinizer
  • Knowledge and practical application experience around IT Security Standards
  • Knowledge and experience with Patapsco
  • Knowledge of ISO 27001
  • Planning & prioritising skills
  • Service orientated customer facing skills
  • Strong system analysis experience required
  • Experience in a service delivery, best practice environment preferred
  • ITIL v3.0 Framework Certificate or equivalent experience of an ITIL Service Management Implementation.
  • Security Clearance (SC) is required for this role and must be maintained.
