Candidate will participate in the mechanical designs of military survivability products developed to protect the modern war fighter in air and on ground. Candidate should be proficient using 3-D Solid Modeling software (PTC Creo preferable) and have an understanding of machine design/analysis, mechanism design, material science, and have the ability to apply engineering best practices, regardless of the product, across the development cycle. The candidate will perform as an individual contributor on projects and may lead junior engineers, create design packages, draft and release technical reports/manuals, and assist in fielding and support of new products. Ideally, the candidate shall also be “hands-on” with abilities supporting mechanical design and product issues related to various DoD pre-production and production programs. QinetiQ is seeking someone with strong mechanical capabilities and project subsystem level leadership experience.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities for the Mechanical Engineer will be the following:

  • Design, layout and modeling of mechanical assemblies, machinery and mechanisms.
  • Perform basic structural, dynamic and thermal analysis.
  • Proficient application of materials science and selection ideologies, heat treatments, finishes, and coatings.
  • Perform basic tolerance analysis.
  • Creation of detailed designs and drawings for fabrication.
  • Conduct internal and external design reviews with engineering teams
  • Work through the various stages of the product development cycle from kickoff to program closeout.
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing, Quality, and Purchasing groups to ensure program success
  • Spearhead and nurture the design development/sustainment cycle of existing and new products.
  • Compose clear and concise engineering estimates for product development cycles start to finish

 

Required knowledge:

Design -- Experience with mechanical system design with a concentrated focus in material science and environmental qualification is required.
Clerical – Experience with a CAD PDM system a plus. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records.



Required Skills

Project Management – The candidate must be able to proactively manage the tasks associated with their assigned project duties and should be able to manage, create, and assign the tasks of 1-2 junior engineers. Ability to work within the limitations of cost and budget is required.
Technical – Hands on experience assembling, testing and troubleshooting mechanical systems in shop environment and field, strong CAD and detailing skills, development of design documentation packages, experience in sourcing vendors of mechanical components, and ability to create and complete test plans
Leadership - Strong leadership skills: initiative, independence, motivation. Think creatively, promote innovation.
Computer Aided Design – Must have experience with relevant CAD packages. PTC Creo and Windchill highly desired.
Drafting – Must have experience with creation of detailed drawings. Experience with geometric tolerance (ASME Y14.5) desirable.

Desired Skills

Experience with: Mechanisms and basic linkage design ideology, material science principles (textiles & ceramics knowledge preferred), basic finite element analysis principles, DOE familiarity with regards to test matrices and product qualification, Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles.
