About the role:


The Hydrodynamics Modelling & Simulation team works primarily within the Maritime and Land business of QinetiQ. The team delivers hydrodynamic analysis and design consultancy services using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and other bespoke numerical tools, working as part of a wider group of naval architects, structural engineers and physicists.


We are looking for a CFD Engineer to join the team. The role requires good knowledge and experience of the application of CFD to ship or submarine hydrodynamics as well as the ability to identify the most appropriate modelling technique for a given problem. A general understanding of hydrodynamic principles as well as specific knowledge or experience of any of the following would be beneficial: turbulence modelling, hydroacoustics, cavitation, fluid-structure interaction modelling or design optimisation. Experience with a CFD package such as STAR-CCM+, ANSYS CFX, Fluent or OpenFoam is required. Other key skills/traits we are looking for are:

  3. Good knowledge of data analysis including experience of programming (Matlab, Python etc.).
  4. Ability to develop alternative strategies to overcome issues and innovate to improve the overall value to the customer.
  5. Good communication skills, both written and presentational. Including the ability to exchange complex information.
  6. Good team working, organisation, communication and attention to detail. 


The role will involve the delivery of technical projects relating to surface ship and submarine hydrodynamic problems,  identifying a methodology for solving a client’s hydrodynamic issue using CFD, conducting the analysis, reporting results and recommending a proposed solution. Projects are likely to include design and analysis of propulsors and control surfaces, manoeuvring simulation, cavitation modelling and fluid-structure interaction modelling.


The role requires presenting work in internal and external forums, including conferences and in customer meetings. Participation in business support activities will also be required including bidding and planning activities through the provision of task estimates and breakdowns of task descriptions.


Key Accountabilities:


  1. Working collaboratively with customers and colleagues to understand the customers’ requirements, help develop the package of work including looking at innovative solutions and then undertake the work in accordance with the agreed plan.
  2. Ensure the work is conducted in a safe manner, highlighting hazards and potentially unsafe practices to Team Lead.
  3. Actively participate and encourage increased collaboration across the team.


The applicant must have a BEng / MEng in Naval Architecture, Aeronautical Engineering or equivalent and should be actively working towards Chartered Engineer status. An MSc or PhD in a relevant field is highly desirable.
