The Role:

QinetiQ operates and manages a variety of measurement facilities (sea ranges) throughout the UK and internationally, for the test and evaluation of naval stealth signatures within the electromagnetic spectrum, for both ships and submarines. Signature data is analysed and evaluated by our experts to provide information to customers to enable them to fully understand the risks to their platforms from the various weapon systems which exploit the electromagnetic spectrum. Right now we are looking for analysts to help us measure, interpret, analyse and report on electromagnetic signatures at our ranges across the UK.


Overall Purpose of the Role:

The primary role is to undertake and support activities associated with electromagnetic measurements (known as rangings), both on shore and on board ships and submarines.



Key Responsibilities:

This role will be accountable to the relevant Electromagnetics Team Leader with the main responsibilities of:

  • Participating in various electromagnetic projects (to include EM ranging and other studies and investigations), working with other analysts and team leads to ensure delivery of associated customer deliverables / reports. This includes:
    • Ranging involvement in a variety of capacities, both on board and shore side
    • Data analysis
    • Report writing
    • Ensuring compliance with all Health and Safety and Environmental requirements and trials planning documentation.
  • Showing committed flexibility to the increased demands of the Royal Navy and assist in the production of highly focussed customer reports to a high technical standard in order to provide an operational advantage
  • Assist in meeting the demands of the RN and MoD customers from both a technical analysis and reporting perspective, and also from their operational and flexibility requirements
  • Assist in meeting and exceeding the expectations of our Customers and increasing the value of the EM ranging team to QinetiQ.


Successful outcomes for this role including meeting the required milestones for customer reporting to include ranging delivery and outputs to customer, including detailed scientific customer reports.



Essential Education, Qualifications and Training
•    Degree in appropriate subject such as Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Software, Electronics or Electrical Engineering
•    Other Level 5/6 qualification in a relevant subject with 2 years directly relevant experience.


Essential Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  •  Aptitude for analytical work with ability to focus for extended periods
  •  IT literate to a good degree of competency across multiple software packages and networks
  •  Experience of producing high quality reports.
  •  A background in a scientific or engineering discipline is desirable, with an aptitude for, and a methodical approach to, analysis considered essential.  
  •  In addition, familiarity with naval platforms and their associated systems would be advantageous but not essential, as training will be given where appropriate.  
  • Experience of report writing is important.
  • Must have UK Driving Licence

  • Physical ability to manage boat transfers and ladders.


Desirable Criteria:

  •   Demonstrably competent and qualified in analysis, interpretation and reporting of analytical data types in electromagnetics or a related discipline
  •   Awareness and understanding of complex ships' systems
  •   Knowledge of signature measurement techniques, equipment and analysis
  •   Knowledge of the Royal Navy and Royal Navy vessels.


Security Clearance:

This role operates within a secure defence environment and as a result requires the successful applicant to hold a British Passport and UK residency for the last 5 years.
