Job description:


QinetiQ has a long heritage in building scientific instruments and mechanisms for the space industry. 
Our projects are highly innovative, technically challenging, and diverse. The Instrument & Equipment 
Portfolio includes a variety of projects going from the development and build of complex space 
instruments to a full IBDM (International Berthing and Docking Mechanism). 


The main objective of the Portfolio Manager is to lead the delivery of the projects related to its business. 
He/she should take ownership of the (financial) performance of the portfolio and set the necessary 
actions in case of deviations from the agreed baseline. 


The Portfolio Manager leads a team of Project Managers, who are responsible of the delivery of the 
assigned projects, and reports to the Head of Space Programs.


Your key responsibilities will be:
• Delivery of the space projects within the assigned portfolio according to the agreed baseline 
including customer satisfaction, time, budgets, and quality. 
• Oversee the status of the projects and opportunities and track the (financial) performance of the 
portfolio. Understand the relations and synergies between the different projects, take 
appropriate actions and flag issues, set priorities if needed, and understand the impact of the 
decisions made.
• Report and communicate in a transparent way on the portfolio performance. Seek for solutions 
on portfolio level and on business level if needed.
• Assure the projects are delivered in line with the guiding processes and work instructions.
Actively support process improvements and implementation.
• Work closely with business development to create new opportunities in line with the portfolio 
strategic plan and business development plan. 
• Act as the chairman for the monthly project reviews for the projects in your portfolio. Follow up 
on agreed actions.
• Develop and maintain a positive engagement with customers, partners, and suppliers.
• Act as line manager of Project Managers within your portfolio: coach and support them, give 
them regular and honest feedback, provide them with an escalation route when needed.


Desired skills/experience/knowledge:
• Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in an engineering or scientific discipline, with 7+ 
years of relevant experience in managing complex projects or portfolio management. 
• Experience in space projects is an important asset, a technical background is a must.
• Knowledge and experience in project management processes and methodologies. 
• Experience in leading a team. You should be able to inspire, empower, and drive change 
through an organization. You should encourage teamwork and are able to delegate and follow 
up. 
• You are able to establish the vision and the direction for the portfolio and influence and align 
others towards this common purpose. 
• You have strong analytical, strategical planning, and execution skills
• Experience of budget and resource management in a project/portfolio management context.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to effectively influence, communicate, and negotiate with all levels of management and 
project stakeholders (internal and external). Empower and inspire people to achieve success.
• Experience in conflict management. 
• Fluency in English. Knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
