The role

Our team based at the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre (BUTEC), Kyle of Lochalsh requires a Team Lead. The successful candidate will be responsible for the line, development & performance management for a team of mechanical and electronic engineers at the Kyle of Lochalsh and Applecross sites. It is expected that in this role, you will be operating as a line manager, while working for the majority of your time as a key engineer in integrated delivery teams and carrying out Technical Leadership duties for Project Work which arises.
 

What will you be doing?

  • This role is responsible for the line, development & performance management for a team of circa six-eight mechanical and electronic engineers ranging from apprentices through to senior engineers. It is expected that this will be approximately 20% of the role.
  • The role will develop the competency of their team in line with business requirements, team needs & individual developments. The individual performing this role is also expected to assist the PMO with bids etc., as defined by the business.
  • Carry out Technical Leadership duties for Project Work, which arises
  • The role will also be responsible for working as part of a wider team to identify improvements in productivity across the Group ensuring that colleagues are exposed to the best opportunities and that the Business is utilising their skills effectively.
  • Responsible for the operation and repair of electronic and electrical or mechanical systems
  • Maintain personal record of competence against an agreed framework.
  • Adhere to local multi-skill arrangements including sea-going work
  • Coaching and mentoring more junior staff in your team
  • Taking on other duties (e.g. TTA, CO, Acq Engineer etc.) during trials in order to ensure sufficient people available for trial operations,


What do you need?

  • HNC/HND in Electronic/Mechanical Engineering or with requisite equivalent knowledge (e.g. Instrumentation and Control systems / similar), or 6 or more years’ experience with appropriate work to demonstrate this level. 
  • Knowledge of electronic or mechanical equipment/systems including communications and DGPS.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical and remote operation equipment and systems.
  • Awareness of health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Team player and excellent communication skills
  • Eligible for DV security clearance.
  • Clean, full UK driving licence.


Desirable Qualifications:
• IOSH Managing Safely.
