Group Insurance Manager

Role Purpose:

To ensure that the Group Insurance programme is sufficiently broad and flexible to respond to the changing activities and risk exposures of the whole of the Group and is priced competitively. To provide senior executives with management information as and when required, and to ensure that the contractual exposures faced by the Group are matched by the protection provided by the insurance programme.


Key Accountabilities:

Business support

  • Advise commercial and procurement teams on all insurance matters, contract reviews, and assist these teams in negotiating with third party customers and suppliers
  • Advise the broader business on all insurance/risk related matters either face to face or through bulletins and the Global Portal
  • Co-ordinate risk management measures between the business and insurers, accompanying insurance risk engineers during site visits
  • Provide insurance advice on larger and "contentious" bids, and input into due diligence on acquisitions and disposals,
  • Act as a director on the board of the Guernsey based Captive insurer



  • Establish systems whereby losses are reported to insurers in a timely and efficient  manner
  • Manage all claims, liaising with insurers and  solicitors as appropriate
  • Periodic claim reviews with insurers


External relationships

  • Support negotiation with customers, in particularly the MoD around contractual requirements/changes
  • Constantly challenge insurer and broker performance, measuring against the agreed KPIs



  • Ensure effective completion of the insurance renewal each year for the Group and effectively manage its total cost of risk (TCOR) in terms of premium and self-insured retentions.
  • Liaise with others within QinetiQ who are engaged in Risk Management
  • Collate the necessary underwriting information, proposals, and Group data to present to insurers each year
  • Ensure that documentation issued by insurers and brokers is appropriate and correct
  • Distribution of the insurance certificates throughout the business as required
  • Manage the payment of premiums, fees and claims within agreed timescales


Key Capabilities/Knowledge:

  • Robust knowledge of the workings of the commercial insurance market
  • Robust Knowledge of corporate obligations in relation to legal and contractual liabilities
  • A good communicator – Much of the role is in conveying to others :-
    • how insurance will/will not  respond to a given situation
    • what the Group actually does
    • the Group’s insurance requirements and priorities
  • Knowledge of Captives, International Programmes, and how to spot the potential for Alternative Risk finance solutions
  • Ability to work effectively either from home or the office in an agile manner as required



  • Experienced in the commercial/corporate  insurance/reinsurance market either in the underwriting or broker environment or
  • Experience as an insurance or risk manager in industry
  • Relevant insurance industry professional qualification from the Chartered Insurance Institute
  • Knowledge of the workings and structure of multinational insurance programmes
  • Desirable – Knowledge of Crisis/Incident Management and Business Continuity
