Combat System Engineer

QinetiQ is currently seeking Combat System Engineers to support and deliver the necessary integration, test, evaluation, and acceptance activities across all phases of the equipment lifecycle to support the development and delivery of operationally effective Combat System (CS) capability.  It enables MOD and industry to make informed decisions based on objective, credible evidence that is generated by experts in an environment free from supply chain conflict of interest.


Our Combat System Engineer teams operate from our Portsdown Technology Park (PTP) and Bristol sites.  PTP hosts various facilities that are representative of key Royal Navy (RN) Combat Systems to allow defect resolution, design support, integration, test and evaluation, acceptance and interoperability activities to be undertaken. Our Bristol office delivers a Maritime combat system engineering consultancy/customer friend role in support of DE&S for warship platforms including Type 26 and Type 31 Frigates.  Work is currently focussed on supporting the design and build of the warships’ combat systems with future work expanding into supporting delivery of in-service capability. In addition QinetiQ is also supporting the development of overseas Test and Evaluation capability which will draw upon the expertise from the Combat System Engineer community.


We are looking for individuals who are willing and able to work at PTP or Bristol, however, the ability and willingness to travel to other locations in the UK and abroad to support external supplier testing and trials will also be necessary. There will also be opportunities to support sea trials on board Royal Navy ships.


Skills/ Experience:

  • Application of a systems engineering approach and execution of key systems engineering activities on significant projects to achieve required outputs;
  • Engaging with stakeholders, project managers and senior technical staff to ensure customer and business needs are satisfied appropriately and problems are mitigated;
  • Strong consultancy core skills (customer facing): communication, task shaping, delivery of written outputs, customer focus;
  • Knowledge of Type 23/26/31/45/QEC combat systems and constituent equipment;
  • Experience of maritime combat systems’ specification, introduction into Service and support;
  • Knowledge and experience of the MOD acquisition process;
  • Understanding and application of relevant regulatory, safety and technical standards;
  • Engagement with equipment suppliers;
  • Identification and resolution of delivery and technical issues;
  • Adoption of a culture of continuous improvement and an ability to develop own professionalism;
  • Conduct sea trials on Royal Navy Ships including potentially overseas;
  • Security Clearance (SC) or willingness to undergo process.


  • Qualified to degree level or with relevant suitable experience;
  • IEng or CEng (preferred) or membership of a relevant engineering institution.


Personal Qualities:

  • Logically analyse problems and resolve issues;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Able to clearly present technical issues to non-specialists;
  • Self-motivated with initiative to work independently on a task.
