Structural Assessment / Integrity Engineer

 

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Structural Assessment/FEA Engineer to join a high performing team of subject matter experts. The Structural Assessment, Integrity and Non-Destructive testing team assess the performance of naval ships and submarines against the demanding environments that they encounter throughout their operational life through digital modelling and physical test and evaluation.

 

Through the application of bespoke in house software and commercial FEA packages, the successful applicant will be working within a close team to produce complex engineering models to deliver critical test and evaluation of submarine and surface ship structures

In addition, you will also support other members of the team in the field of Structural Integrity and Non-Destructive Evaluation.

 

The team is relied upon to deliver mission critical solutions for our customers in commercial and defence sectors in the UK and worldwide.

 

Currently, we are seeking positive individuals to add to the team with demonstrable experience in one or more of the subject areas listed below to be based in Edinburgh (Rosyth). We are looking for the right candidate therefore would consider any level of experience.

 

Subject areas:

  • Analytical structural analysis techniques
  • Linear and non-linear structural analysis using FEA
  • Progressive failure analysis
  • Fatigue Analysis
  • Fracture Mechanics
  • Materials testing including data collection and analysis
  • Composite structures
  • Macro-driven processing/post-processing

 

Key accountabilities:

  1. Acting as, or operating under, the overall technical lead/project manager being responsible for time, cost and quality of team and individual work
  2. Production of timely and proactive engineering outputs, through attending and contributing to meetings and other communication methods, both formal and informal, as required
  3. Definition and delivery of technical workplans, resources and tasks, working with the project manager on schedule, budget, risks, dependencies and constraints.
  4. Ensuring effective governance to demonstrate that the technical solution meets appropriate regulatory, legal, safety and engineering standards.
  5. Fully capturing and understanding the customers’ requirements and providing innovative solutions to customers’ problems
  6. Leading or contributing to bidding activities
  7. Building and development of customer relationships to seek out new or follow-on opportunities

 

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with FEA modelling packages especially Abaqus CAE
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or other suitable discipline
  • Membership of relevant professional engineering institution or commitment to achieve relevant registration status;
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in an appropriate engineering role
  • Eligible for UK SC clearance

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of complex maritime structures
  • Knowledge of performance capabilities of a variety or Royal Navy Platforms
  • Working knowledge of structural fabrication and current maritime construction techniques
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex engineering drawings with minimum supervision
  • Understanding of maritime construction materials
  • Understanding of structural fatigue and fracture mechanics
  • Understanding of commercial, financial and legislative requirements of projects;
  • Understanding of Non-Destructive Evaluation techniques and how data obtained from NDE can influence maritime structural requirements
