Mechanical Engineer, Principal

Job purpose:

Candidate will be responsible for design and development of military and commercial hardware products.  Products include robotic ground vehicles, vehicle autonomy hardware, ground robots and ruggedized electronic hardware products.  Additional products include ruggedized military electronic equipment for maritime applications.  Acting as a technical lead on projects, the candidate will perform design tasks and analysis, organize development tasks and product testing while coordinating activities to meet program deadlines.  Candidate should be proficient using 3-D Solid Modeling software (PTC CREO preferable), have experience with metal fabrication design and injection molded plastic design, and have an understanding of manufacturing and testing practices. The candidate shall also be “hands-on” with abilities support mechanical design and product issues related to various DOD pre-production and production programs.  Candidate will also participate in the formal Engineering Change process.  The candidate will provide direction and guidance to other engineers which may include direct report responsibilities. 

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  1. Facilitate design tasks, establish project goals and track progress.
  2. Perform design and drawing checking and approval.
  3. Electromechanical design, layout and modeling of electro-mechanical assemblies, robotic systems and assorted military hardware.
  4. Create design specifications.
  5. Perform system level tolerance analysis.
  6. Perform structural, dynamic and thermal analysis.
  7. Interface with vendors and identify sources of supply for critical fabrication items.
  8. Creation of detail designs and drawings for fabrication.
  9. Interface with customers on a project engineering level.
  10. Interface with Business Development on DOD proposals, creating technical volumes and cost estimation for development programs.

 

Required knowledge:
Design – Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. 

 

Manufacturing – Experience creating and working with formal design/development processes with an emphasis on transitioning projects from prototype development to production.

 

Required Skills:

 

Computer Aided Design – Must have experience with 3D CAD modeling tools.  Experience with PTC Creo design tool a plus.

Drafting – Must have experience with creation of detailed drawing and geometric tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).

Analysis – Must have experience with structural and thermal analysis (shock and vibration analysis a plus).

Communication- Must demonstrate excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Computer- Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

 

Qualifications: 

  1. 7-12 years’ experience in mechanical design in all aspects of a product lifecycle.
  2. Direct project engineering or technical lead experience managing design tasks
  3. Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and machining processes
  4. Experience in processing Engineering Changes to documentation on DOD programs.
  5. Mechanical Engineering BS (or equivalent), MS preferred.
