Early Careers - Health and Safety

How long have you worked in your current role at QinetiQ?

Just over a year, I started on the 1st of September 2021.

Where do you work?

My home site is Farnborough, if I’m not at my desk I can usually be found with the Site Operations team or out on the SSSI (Site of Specialist Scientific Interest).

I’ve been very lucky to visit sites such as Pendine, West Freugh and Malvern and have done extended visits at Shoeburyness and Boscombe, getting to grips with how different each site is has been mind-blowing.

What do you like most about your role?

Ah that’s easy, firstly it’s my team, the HSEA’s here are a wealth of knowledge and some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet! I’ve had the most amazing first year thanks to their generosity and willing to impart their knowledge. A close second has been the chance to explore different sites and see just a fraction of the scope of work we do here at QinetiQ.

What has working within this role at QinetiQ taught you?

To start off with, my experience lies in my inexperience, I get to ask everybody about pretty much everything, leading off of this that I will never know it all and that’s absolutely okay. That having a team I can be fully open with means that I bring the best of myself to my role, most of us will spend the majority of our waking hours at work for a fair old chunk of our lives, life’s too short to not enjoy what we do and who we work with.

What have you achieved in your role so far?

I’m really pleased to have been involved with development of new training modules online (Risk Assessment and Sustainability Appraisal Awareness) delivery of a Knowledge Burst on Safety Culture, being a part of the Discovery programme and being able to represent my wider team was a blast and so nice to meet people in person as my on boarding was virtual last year. I’ve trained in Mental Health First Aid and strive every day to make personal and psychological safety a core value. I also had the privilege of facilitating 2022’s Safe for Life awards panel for our Global Recognition Gala – being able to site with colleagues from around the world and hearing about how our colleagues champion safety was such a highlight for me.

Why would you recommend a career at QinetiQ?

The opportunities here are incredible, from the expertise and history of QinetiQ, to the development and support when looking at where you want to be. It’s a fascinating place to work and has taught me a lot in just a year.
