As a global leader in Laser Directed Energy technology, specialising in the development, testing and integration of high-energy laser systems, we are now accepting applications for a Senior Laser Scientist to join our team in Adelaide. The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team to support the development of high energy laser sources. Through your laser and/or optical systems expertise you will be actively involved in delivering work packages related to novel laser systems.

 

The opportunity

 

As a Senior Laser Scientist, your responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

 

  • Leading & contributing to work packages associated with the delivery of innovative laser systems including laser weapons from concept development and laboratory experiments through to engineering design, build, and test
  • Leading & advising on laser amplifier designs and optical subsystems including beam control and safety considerations
  • Leading & supporting system integration and field testing of high-power laser systems
  • Contributing ideas for internal investment and development of intellectual property for business growth
  • Sharing knowledge through reports and presentations to colleagues and customers
  • Providing expert technical training and guidance to QinetiQ employees, ensuring effective transfer of knowledge
  • Planning work packages and providing technical leadership of projects as appropriate
  • Assisting in establishing and maturing a fit-for-purpose facility including design considerations and various equipment installation

 

To be successful in the position of Senior Laser Scientist, you will need to bring with you:

 

  • PhD in Laser Science/Optics discipline essential
  • Substantial post-qualification technical experience essential
  • An appropriate Physics/Science bachelor’s degree essential
  • A background in the Defence industry will be highly regarded
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of lasers and optics
  • Working knowledge of laser systems, optics, and basic properties of laser beams
  • Experience setting up or constructing laser orientated experiments or products
  • Experience of research programmes involving modelling, experiment, and analysis
  • A proven ability to independently lead on/manage technical work packages in the laser/optical systems field
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Technical training and leadership ability
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Awareness of system engineering principles will be highly regarded

 

 

Due to the nature of the role, applicants must hold an Australian Defence security clearance, NV1 minimum or have the ability to obtain one
