The Role
As a Fire Safety Manager, you will be part of the UK Safety team, providing support to the UK business in fire safety, prevention, protection, emergency response and assurance across the UK footprint.  The purpose of the role will be to drive demonstrable change in fire safety performance and raise the standards of fire safety management throughout the UK footprint. 

 

Day-to-day, you’ll deliver Fire Risk Assessments (FRAs) and provide competent, assured technical fire safety advice to the business, helping to drive continual improvement through the development and implementation of formal fire improvement plans. Acting as a trusted business partner, you will support fire safety, prevention, protection and management activities across the organisation, ensuring robust and effective fire safety services are maintained. You will also work closely with business and site representatives, as well as the wider safety team, to embed a strong culture of continuous improvement and fire safety awareness throughout the estate.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of fire safety standards, arrangements and management practices across the QinetiQ UK estate
  • Provide expert fire safety advice, guidance and technical support to stakeholders across the business.
  • Support the delivery of the Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) programme, working closely with site representatives, budget holders and the Senior Fire Safety Lead
  • Review and maintain fire safety policies, instructions, guidance and compliance programmes, ensuring alignment with current and emerging legislation and best practice
  • Coordinate fire safety improvement initiatives, assurance activities and performance monitoring, reporting compliance status and driving enhancements to prevention and protection measures
  • Deliver fire safety training and act as the key point of contact for regulators, enforcement authorities, industry bodies and other stakeholders on fire and emergency management matters

 

Essential experience of the Fire Safety Manager

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, influence and engage diverse stakeholders in Fire & Emergency Management, building strong relationships and managing conflict effectively
  • Strong working knowledge of UK fire safety legislation, regulatory frameworks, enforcement bodies and fire prevention/protection standards
  • Experience conducting Fire Risk Assessments (FRAs) in complex industrial and sensitive environments, with the ability to apply fire safety standards throughout project lifecycles
  • Proven ability to assess fire safety risks, scrutinise business activities, interpret legislative and contractual requirements, and provide practical, risk-based solutions
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to evaluate information quickly and develop innovative, effective outcomes
  • Experienced Fire Safety Advisor with recognised professional accreditation (e.g. IFE, IFSM), evidence of continuous professional development, and a hands-on approach underpinned by integrity, independence and professionalism

 

Essential qualifications for the Fire Safety Manager:

  • Professional qualifications in fire safety management essential, ideally a level 4 Diploma qualification
  • Competent Fire Risk Assessor (accredited through a third party accredited body e.g. IFE, IFSM, NFRAR)
  • Full and clean UK driving licence

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Boscombe Down site with a minimum average site attendance of three days per week. Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites will be expected.

 

MOD Boscombe Down is a unique operational site featuring the longest military runway in the UK. Primarily focusing on providing testing, evaluation and support services for aviation and aerospace systems. Renowned for its extensive flight testing capabilities the site plays a vital role in the UK’s aviation defence contributing to the development, testing and airworthiness of military aircraft enhancing operational readiness and effectiveness.
