People Advisor, up to 12 Month Fixed Term Contract 


Role Purpose

HR generalist role supporting People Partner Defence and the People Director, UK Defence,  in the delivery of the People agenda for the Sector. 

Be the key point of contact for managers and employees for the UK Defence Programmes area and provide advice and guidance on resourcing, performance management, complex case work, special project work, bid support and  talent management.

Support the People Director via the People Partner with planning, collating and preparing reports/submissions for the regular LT and SPR meetings and in supporting ad hoc UKD LT-related projects and activities. 


Key Accountabilities

The Key Result areas for this role are as follows:

1    People Resourcing – 
o    This will include supporting the New Hires process, Secondments and Internal moves . 
o    Keeping an overview of recruitment activities and raising areas of concerns/issues to the People Partner.
o    Lead in weeky offer panel discussions for UKD – Programme offers
o    It will also include creating documentation for secondments and updating the secondment tracker as appropriate
2    People Management – This will include providing support to the People Partner on:
o    Complex Employee Relations and Performance Management cases
o    Collation and Preparation of Pay and Progression submissions each quarter
o    Collation and Preparation of Talent and Succession Planning primarily for N-3 and below, 
o    Creation of Sector specific Salary Review Pack in line with Group Instructions 
o    Provide HR Reporting and Analysis
3    People Engagement – 
o    Support the People Partner and the People Director in driving the engagement across the Defence Sector and challenge and support managers to drive their individual team engagement. 
o    Maintain overview of engagement using the Peakon tool and provide data and stats as requested. Identify trends and suggest actions to drive forward engagement. 
o    Providing best practise guidance and updating the knowledge base via manager upskilling 
o    Collation and Preperation of the monthly submission of the UKD People MBR pack

4    Supporting Specific Projects and Bidding activities 
o    Support the People Partner and People Director with Organisational Development activities. Specifically assist in producing Org Charts and follow up on people actions arising out of the change.  
o    Working with the People Partner, supporting bidding activities ensuring that all the right HR Assurance Certificates are in place and current and ensuring these are loaded on the Kahootz site.  Opportunity to undertake initial bid review and provide RAG status  recommendations to the People Partner
o    Assisting with any governance or Group reporting activities as tasked by the People Partner
o    Supporting the wider HR Ops team with activities as needed and becoming an integral part of the team

Key Capabilities/Knowledge

o    Sound judgement and decision-making in the handling of sensitive employee matters.
o    Good influencing and advisory skills to support and challenge managers as appropriate
o    Strong verbal and written communication skills with a high level of attention to detail.
o    Ability to prioritise work by managing conflicting priorities. 
o    Ability to analyse information and extract key messages and present succinctly
o    Ability to build relationships quickly and establish trust is key. 


Experience & Qualifications

  • This role would suit a person who is studying or has already attained their CIPD qualification or Equivalent and is looking to apply their knowledge in a practical manner and grow their skillset and competence initially as HR Generalist but then looking to move to a more specialised area in accordance with interest/aspirations. 
  • Experience of managing consultations, TUPE and experience of managing Mergers and Acquisitions would be an advantage
  • Experience of handling difficult and challenging situations will be helpful and, specifically, a minimum of two years’ employee relations experience
  • Candidate should have excellent working knowledge of creating and managing Excel spreadsheets and using Powerpoint and able to work with different technologies and does not get phased by this.
