QinetiQ is currently recruiting a talented and robust principal level engineer to assess aircraft performance and handling, delivering expertise within flight physics and safety across amazing rotary wing platforms. You’ll be involved in various areas of helicopters, providing crucial assessment of the platform’s capability for; rapid movement, speed, height, weight and general areas of the airframes. You will be involved with all areas of assisting the MOD in their selection of airframes using your expertise and industry experience.
The Flight Physics positions will typically focus on evaluation and sometimes testing and/or teaching of one or more of the following: aircraft performance and flying qualities, aircraft handling, Flight Control Systems, Engine Control and Air Data Systems.
The position is based at the MOD Boscombe Down site, which has two runways, including the longest military runway in the UK. Its’ air ground-based facilities include an environmental test facility, hypobaric chamber, radio frequency environment generator, night vision test facility and avionic rigs. It is also home to the Empire Test Pilot School.
What do I need?
You’ll need experience in some of the following areas would be desirable, but not essential.
- Relevant Qualifications or demonstrable experience in this area of work and of each of the standards e.g. a degree in a related field, year’s industry experience or any relevant certifications or chartership.
- The management of time and prioritisation of activities to manage workload and pressure effectively
- Experience working within rotary wing platforms such as Wildcat, Merlin and Chinook and or certification within a relevant area i.e. aerospace systems
- would be highly desirable
- Ability to plan based on need and in line with business strategy
- Experience of managing a team of professionals
- Understanding of flight physics, airframes and their capabilities and associated risks.
What will I be doing?
Using your skills and experience you will be responsible for providing Flight Physics Rotary Wing technical input to multi-disciplinary projects in line with customer requirements.
You will be responsible for:
- Delivering Flight Physics specialist technical principals and advice, research, consultancy tasks, technical governance and in-depth commercial awareness in line with the customer requirement(s)
- Assisting in the selection of airframes and assessment of capability such as safety and performance to the client (MOD)
- Completing specific specialist technical activities
- Appropriately utilising technical processes, methods and tools within the specialist area to deliver tasks
- Integrity to make technical judgements based on the analysis of Flight Physics information.
- Lead of very complex work or mentoring/leading of large teams
