Associate IT Engineer

We have an opportunity for an LINUX Engineer to work on the High Performance Compute Clusters at our Haslar site.


The role is varied and will include a number of different elements.


Cluster Systems Management


Manage the running and maintenance of the HPC cluster. This requires an in depth understanding of the LINUX operating system and associated toolsets. It will also require a good understanding of networking protocols and queuing systems.


Systems Maintenance


Take responsibility for all aspects of system maintenance including ensuring robust backup and security policies are in place and enforced.


Growth Strategy and System Improvements


Build, install and configure LINUX based clustered compute environments. Display an understanding of the latest developments in a wide range of computer hardware and how it can be applied to solve high performance computing problems. Be responsible for architecting improved solutions, including complete new clusters.


Undertake other duties as directed by the Delivery Manager.

  • Show the commitment and ability to identify and understand the current and future needs of the customer, and be willing to go that ‘extra step’ to ensure individual customer’s needs are met.
  • Experience of offering user support for a range of levels.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Domain administration.
  • A good all round knowledge of the LINUX operating system, including setting up servers, DNS / DHCP and use of shell scripting,
  • Linux administration including installation, configuration, compiling software and bash scripting.
  • Basic networking knowledge including DNS / DHCP on the LINUX operating systems.
  • Must be willing to learn and undertake training in supporting technologies including VMWare, LAGs, INFINIBAND and Microsoft Windows GPO and WSUS technologies


Desirable Skills and qualifications


  • HNC or equivalent experience in a computing or IT related subject.
  • Knowledge of business computing standards including redundancy, data integrity and backup and archiving strategies.
  • Networking knowledge including VLANs, LAGs and Infiniband.
  • Knowledge of VMware.
  • Knowledge of Windows Storage (spaces, failover-cluster).
  • Any existing knowledge of high performance compute cluster concepts such as parallel computing, job scheduling and hardware architectures. There is potential to learn on the job but a basic knowledge would be useful.
  • Backup software experience (for example, Networker, NetVault, Netbackup, Veeam).


Please note that all applicants must be eligible for DV clearance. There is work pattern flexibility but in general this role requires on site attendance.
