The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be delivering mechanical design solutions and taking ownership of delivery. You will explore and test the problem space thoroughly, before generating hardware solutions and be prepared to lead the presentation of these ideas at design reviews and group critiques drawing on more senior member’s knowledge as required.
Day-to-day, this role is to support our growing hydrodynamic model testing capability where bespoke models are designed, developed, manufactured to tight tolerances and tested in our world-class facilities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Reviews: This role will lead on formal design reviews and be able to explain the thinking behind concepts at these reviews with confidence, presenting at design critique sessions and chairing engineering reviews with Manufacturing and Procurement communities
- Delivery: This role requires balancing competing requirements to deliver optimal solutions, using strong influencing skills to refine customer needs, and clearly articulating assumptions, exclusions, risks and controls throughout the project lifecycle
- Technical: This role requires experience in designing complex systems and components for test or operational use, with the ability to independently inspect work against defined standards and apply measurement-based, scientific thinking to problem solving
- Governance: This role involves contributing actively to FMEA and HazID activities, compiling compliance evidence and supporting formal demonstrations of compliance
Essential experience of the Mechanical Design Engineer:
- We would expect the individual to have an understanding and some experience the following competency areas – Including but not limited to:
- Hazard Identification, Safety Cases & Safety Management systems
- Applying Analytical, Simulation and Modelling Techniques
- Materials Selection, Coatings & Corrosion
- Concept Design & Development
- Experience designing technical hardware solutions. Ideally from a regulated industry requiring complex problem solving, precision tolerances or specific domain knowledge
- Significant experience creating technical drawings from 3D Models, working with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and subject matter experts, ideally using SolidWorks.
Essential qualifications for the Mechanical Design Engineer:
- HNC/HND/Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or Product Design (or equivalent experience)
- Knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals, formal training or experience in engineering subjects such as materials, stress awareness, mechanism designs, design principles, electrical awareness etc.
- Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design degree or equivalent
- Should have achieved CEng level against the UK SPEC and have joined a recognised professional institution

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Gosport site with an average site attendance of three days per week.
