Be part of the QinetiQ journey. Join us as a Principal Technician – Ground Radio / Surveillance at our MOD Hebrides Range Control site, South Uist, but part of a business wide capability team occasionally supporting other sites across the UK.
The Hebrides Range is located at various sites on the islands of South Uist, Benbecula and St. Kilda and is operated by QinetiQ on behalf of the Ministry of Defence under the terms of the Long Term Partnering Agreement (LTPA) contract. The Missile Testing Range was built by the Royal Air Force in the 1950s; today, the site consists of Deep Range for complex weapons trials and in-service firings and an Inner Range for ground-based air defence campaigns.
The role
As a Principal Technician – Ground Radio / Surveillance based on South Uist you will work as part of the wider Engineering team and be responsible to the Ground Radio Systems Team Lead. We offer flexible working for this position in line with corporate and local guidelines, including working from home and hybrid working, TOIL, flexible hours, video conferencing, flexible breaks and paid overtime.
This is a safety critical role, where you will provide Engineering Leadership and expertise to ensure that both air and sea surveillance equipment, along with associated communications / networked systems, remain available to support the safe delivery of trials and other customer activities.
Day-to-day you will provide:
- System Management of Primary and Secondary Air Surveillance radars and ancillary equipment.
- System Management of fixed and deployable Marine surveillance radars and ancillary equipment.
- Support to Ground to Air and Ship to Shore communications systems, associated displays and network infrastructure
Accountabilities of the Principal Technician – Ground Radio / Surveillance
- Engineering Leadership, maintenance and repair of Air Traffic Management (ATM) Systems and other equipment listed above.
- The Technical Handover of ATM systems to NATS Air Traffic Controllers and Range Operations personnel prior to operational use.
- The management of protected documents and information systems.
- Co-ordination and Management of equipment maintenance records in accordance with MOD 700 series documentation, including statutory reports to RAF/MOD.
- The management of software and hardware system build states.
- Engineering Policy and relevant MOD JSPs, CAA and MAA regulations.
- Act as the Surveillance Engineering Lead during key system upgrades or replacements, working closely with project communities.
- Maintain Technical Assurance and Security Accreditation documentation in accordance with company policies.
- Coaching, Mentoring and Supervision of junior members of the team including apprentices.
Qualifications and experience of the Principal Technician – Ground Radio / Surveillance
- HND or equivalent services or industry experience in relevant Electrical, Electronic or communications discipline
- RAF Watchman ‘Q’ course qualification or equivalent airfield radar qualification
- Membership of a relevant professional body, and/or registration with the UK engineering council as EngTech with relevant further experience / development towards IEng or equivalent.
- Fit to undertake Working at Height/Tower and Mast climbing, full training will be provided.
- Fit to undertake Helicopter Underwater Escape Training for helicopter transit to St Kilda, full training will be provided.
- Full UK driving license
