THE ROLE:

 

This is a new opportunity for an experienced Radio Communications Engineer to join a team of dedicated professionals to deliver new and exciting Communications systems into the civil and Defence environment. In this newly created role, you will use your experience of mobile communications, networked systems and architectures, information services and security conventions to lead a number of complex technical projects. With previous experience at all stages of the engineering development life cycle, you will be looking to step away from a hands on role, applying your knowledge to the 'bigger picture', working directly with clients, providing authoritative expert advice for formulating and de-risking procurement options.

 

The Radio Communications Engineer will work with the technical management team to identify resources required for the task and provide regular progress updates. This will include undertaking research into state-of-the art techniques for resilient communications at the physical and MAC layers covering a diverse range of communications technologies from across the Electromagnetic spectrum including Radio Frequency (RF) and optical wavelengths. 

 

The team support projects across a range of QinetiQ sites, so mobility is a key requirement of the role. Although based in Malvern, the candidate will be expected to work at other QinetiQ/customer sites as required – with travel & subsistence provided.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

You will be working specifically with Military Comms Systems. The successful Radio Communications Engineer will take responsibility for their own technical projects to deliver new Communications systems into the civil and Defence environment. You will take responsibility for the task’s technical output, working with the technical management team to identify resources required for the task and provide regular progress updates. The Radio Communications Engineer will work closely with clients to understand requirements, provide expert advice and take away problems that need experimental research to resolve. Therefore this role is a hybrid of technical engineering and consultancy.

 

THE FIT:

 

This role would suit an experienced Communications Engineer with broad unerstanding of radio communications systems. We are open to engineers who may not have much experience directly supporting clients/consultancy skills but want to move into this type of role.

 

You will have knowledge of systems including HF, V/UHF and satcom across all critical facets of the capability, including a number of the following:
o Antennas and propagation
o Spectrum management, including dynamic spectrum access techniques and Ofcom and Joint Spectrum Authority (JSA) organisations
o Spread Spectrum techniques e.g. direct sequence and frequency hopping
o Communications security (COMSEC) and Transmission Security (TRANSEC)
o Waveform design, including Physical (PHY) layer modulation and Forward Error Correction (FEC) coding
o Knowledge of communications standards (e.g. MIL-STDs, NATO STANAGs, 802.11xx) desirable.
