Job Title:  Fluid Dynamicist

Location:

Gosport, England, United Kingdom

Role Type:  Permanent – Full Time

Package:  Competitive Salary + Benefits

Role ID:    SF19659

Are you ready to be part of the future? At QinetiQ, we’re not just imagining tomorrow we are creating it. From cutting-edge defence technology to ground-breaking innovations our mission is to empower and protect lives. Join us as a Fluid Dynamicist at our Gosport site, where you will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology in partnership with some of the most brilliant minds.

The Role
As a Fluid Dynamicist, you will deliver advanced fluid dynamics analysis, testing, and design consultancy services to the UK Ministry of Defence and commercial customers. As part of a multidisciplinary engineering group, you will have opportunities to contribute to complex fluid flow challenges, including hydrodynamics, flow stability, and manoeuvring behaviour across a variety of platforms and systems.

Day-to-day, you’ll focus on fluid flow modelling and experimental testing, including model design and manufacture, propulsor and flow device optimisation, resistance and propulsion analysis, and cavitation and flow visualisation studies.

This role would suit someone with experience in a transferable engineering environment—such as aerospace or automotive—who has a proven track record of applying fluid dynamics expertise to innovative design challenges.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver technical tasks such as computational and experimental fluid dynamics simulations in support of system design and operation, including breaking down complex problems, planning execution, and working with project managers to track progress against budget and schedule
  • Coordinate with CAD, structures, instrumentation, and workshop teams during model design, build, and testing phases
  • Conduct experiments and simulations, including detailed data analysis and reporting, taking ownership of the quality and accuracy of outputs
  • Engage with customers and collaborate with subject matter experts to develop innovative, technically robust solutions to fluid-related challenges
  • Support business development activities through the creation of technical proposals, delivery plans, and resource estimates and deliver technical presentations at conferences, customer meetings, and industry forum
  • Mentor and support junior team members, helping to develop their knowledge in fluid mechanics and applied analysis

Essential experience of the Fluid Dynamicist:

  • Strong experience in fluid dynamics within engineering environments (e.g. aerodynamics , hydrodynamics, marine, aerospace, energy, or defence)
  • Knowledge of data analysis techniques, including experience with programming tools such as MATLAB or Python
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics (e.g. CFD or FEA) and exposure to numerical modelling methods
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly
  • Highly motivated, with a collaborative mindset and strong attention to detail
  • Effective team working and organisational skills

Essential qualifications for the Fluid Dynamicist:

  • Holds a BEng/MEng in Fluid Dynamics, Aerodynamics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline

We value difference and we don’t have a fixed idea when it comes to background or education, provided you can show the required level of experience and willingness to learn then we would like to hear from you.

This role is 37 hours per week based at Haslar. Hybrid working patterns are available.

Our facilities at the Haslar Marine Technology Park are state-of-the-art, including our ocean basin rotating arm, and marine towing tank, offering an unparalleled environment for testing and refining designs. Our marine technology offers our global customers a service to deliver constrained hydrodynamic model tests of surface ships, submarines, offshore structures, and renewable energy devices.
