The Role
As a Naval Architect, you will be delivering hydrodynamic testing and design consultancy services to the UK Ministry of Defence and commercial customers, additionally, as part of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering group, there will be opportunities to be involved in ship and submarine stability, seakeeping and manoeuvring. 

 

Day-to-day, you’ll focus on hull model design and manufacture, propeller design and manufacture, resistance and propulsion experiments, and cavitation experiments. 

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver technical tasks, such as hydrodynamic simulations/experiments of ships and submarines in support of design and operation including the breakdown of complex tasks and execute the planned schedule of work, working with project managers to track progress vs budget and coordinate the work of CAD, structures, instrumentation and workshop teams during the model design and building phase
  • Conduct experiments/simulations, including data analysis and reporting, taking responsibility for the quality of the output
  • Engage with the customer and, seeking the support of subject matter experts within QinetiQ, develop technical solutions to our customer’s problems
  • Participate in business development activities through the provision of technical delivery plans and resource requirements to the bidding team
  • Deliver technical presentations in external forums, such as conferences and customer meetings
  • Support junior team members to improve their knowledge of your areas of expertise

 

Essential experience of the Naval Architect: 

  • Strong experience in the marine industry
  • Knowledge of data analysis, including experience of programming (e.g. Matlab)
  • Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and presentational, including the ability to exchange complex technical information
  • Highly motivated, with a positive attitude and values of integrity, collaboration and performance
  • Good team working, organisation and attention to detail

 

Essential qualifications for the Naval Architect:

  • Holds a BEng/MEng in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering

This role is 37 hours per week based at Haslar. Hybrid working patterns are available.

 

Our facilities at the Haslar Marine Technology Park are state-of-the-art, including our ocean basin rotating arm, and marine towing tank, offering an unparalleled environment for testing and refining designs. Our marine technology offers our global customers a service to deliver constrained hydrodynamic model tests of surface ships, submarines, offshore structures, and renewable energy devices.
