System Architect - CEMA

The Cyber and Electromagnetic Activity (CEMA) is a rapidly expanding domain in MOD and Government.  QinetiQ have a need for Systems Architects to support the breadth of our CEMA portfolio of current projects and future opportunities.

In this critical role you will work with a multi-disciplinary team to both lead projects and form part of a wider team of engineers, working to advance the UK’s ability to defence against threats and create mission advantage within the CEMA domain.

Overall Purpose of the Job

Working as the Lead Systems Architect directing a team of Systems Engineers, or as a Systems Architect as part of a larger team of engineers, you will be required to apply Systems Thinking and Architectural Practices across all aspects of a CEMA capability’s lifecycle.

You will apply structured and disciplined architectural and engineering methods in support of activities such as elicitation of requirements; exploring and de-risking solution options; capturing designs; through to assuring capabilities across the Defence Lines of Development.

The work may be in direct support of our customer(s), embedded as a technical subject matter expert within their team; or leading a QinetiQ delivering solutions/products for our customers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Leading the technical direction and delivery of project outcomes/outputs.
  • Managing a diverse array of stakeholders.
  • Applying systems engineering approaches and architectural methodologies to capture, design and assurance customer solutions.
  • Working across complex internal and external team boundaries to solve problems.
  • Presenting of technical outputs, appropriate to the audience’s knowledge and expertise, in both written and presentational formats.
  • Supporting both bid and project teams in the development of solutions to customer problems.
  • Collaborating across QinetiQ and Customer project teams to enhance the end-solution.
  • Identification of opportunities for follow on work and supporting their pursuit and bidding from a technical perspective.

Person Specification

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Knowledge and experience working in the Cyber and/or Electromagnetic domains for MOD and Government related projects.
  • Ability to elicit, articulate and manage customer needs and system requirements, and translate these into operational, logical and physical architectures representing the enterprise.
  • Defining or undertaking assurance (i.e. pan-DLOD V&V) activities for MOD and/or Government capabilities.
  • Coordinating, supporting and chairing design reviews to ensure adherence to customer and corporate standards and governance.
  • Project/engineering planning to ensure all aspects of the engineering life cycle are considered from the outset.
  • Selection and tailoring of engineering lifecycles to support capability delivery in a cost-effective and efficient manner;
  • Application of architectural frameworks (e.g. TOGAF, MODAF, Zachman) and associated modelling languages (e.g. UML, Sys ML, etc.)

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Proficiency in DOORS® use for the capture and management of user and system requirements
  • Enterprise Architect application experience

Essential Education, Qualifications and Training

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering or technical discipline, or proven experience working in an equivalent engineering role.
  • 7 years+ experience
  • Intention to join/membership of appropriate professional body.

Desirable Education, Qualifications and Training

  • Higher-level degree or Senior professional registration (Chartered Engineer or similar) in relevant engineering or technical discipline
