IT Database Administrator

The Database Administrator role is responsible for ensuring the day to day operation, performance and integrity of the QinetiQ Group database estates supported by IT Services.  As part of the role the database administrator will be supported in the development of their working knowledge of multiple relational and non-relational database technologies including Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, AzureDB and their associated technologies as well as any other database systems that are required by the QinetiQ Group.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Support the Group Lead for Tier 3 Delivery Services in the delivery of IT network services to QinetiQ
  • Support Operational teams to ensure the successful transition of new technologies into operational service
  • Collaborate with Operational support teams to develop solutions and services aligned to QinetiQ’s strategies and requirements
  • Maintain a level of knowledge on new technologies sufficient to understand their applicability to our customer base and to implement and support them, if appropriate
  • Manage all the elements required to deliver best practice database solutions
  • Maintain and develop operational standards and documentation
  • Ensure adherence to relevant internal and industry standards via the auditing of systems against documented standards
  • Ensure developed database solutions are compatible with automated maintenance processes
  • Develop knowledge on the implementation of mature services including monitoring, automation, scripting and asset management tooling
  • Ensure solutions implemented meet all functional requirements
  • Maintain system security at all times
  • Ensure all security vulnerabilities and updates are highlighted to operational teams
  • Comply with configuration control requirements
  • Ensure all mandatory training is under taken

  • Extensive, demonstrable knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server systems management and development
  • Extensive familiarity with data management principals and best practices to ensure performance and consistency
  • Excellent knowledge in database installation, migration and configuration
  • Demonstrable experience of high availability features 
  • Detailed understanding of query optimisation and performance tuning techniques
  • Knowledge of implementing solutions with robust recovery plans
  • Familiarity with Microsoft T-SQL


Desirable Knowledge

  • Experience in Microsoft Data Platform and other cloud or edge computing focused environments
  • Other relational / non-relational database management systems
  • Microsoft SQL Server Reporting / Analysis / Integration Services
  • Windows Server 2012 – 2019
  • Familiarity with database automation technologies
  • Power BI
  • DevOps and Data Analytics experience
  • Redgate SQL Monitor and tool set


Experience & Qualifications:

  • MCSE, MCSA / MCTS or equivalent experience
  • Experienced in the day to day maintenance and operation of SQL Server in an enterprise environment
  • Experience working in a highly available environment
  • Experience in capacity planning and performance tuning
  • Experience in full development and project life cycles
  • Proven ability to analyse and troubleshoot technical problems to a root cause
  • Security Clearance to be held and maintained at level appropriate for the systems being managed
