Land Domain Solution Architect

We are looking to appoint a Solution Architect, who will lead in further development and execution of QinetiQ’s Land Domain strategy. This will involve engaging senior customer stakeholders to shape their thinking and strategy; leading the development of system and focused propositions; and, guiding and supporting strategic captures, which are central to our growth ambitions across the Land domain.


This an exciting opportunity where you will be at the centre of QinetiQ’s ongoing investment in the land domain seeking to exploit our existing and developing capabilities, working with newly acquired companies and innovative partners.



To provide the solution leadership of disruptive propositions to meet our Land growth ambitions. Key priorities will include: development and presentation of disruptive solutions in cooperation with internal and customer stakeholders aligned with QinetiQ growth themes to enable new opportunities to be closed by the Business development Team across:

  • Robotics & Autonomous Systems (RAS) / Human Machine Teaming (HMT)
  • Experimentation
  • Mission Systems Integration
  • Cyber & Electromagnetic Activities
  • Intelligence, Situational Awareness & Reconnaissance (ISTAR)

A key emphasis of this role is on driving innovations into solution development against customer articulated challenges.   This will involve significant customer engagement, working hand in glove with the programmes and business development teams.


Key pre-requisites are having the ability to co-ordinate development of a clear strategy and vision, definition of compelling and innovative solutions, then leading and directing multi-disciplined teams across its execution.



  1. Strategy: working alongside the Integrated Delivery Team Lead, other Solution Architects & Head of Business Development, support definition of the technical & capability  solution  across the key Land Domain focussed areas, leading in definition and realisation of objectives (including raising investment cases) set out in the Integrated Strategic Business Plan (5 year business plan).
  2. Strategic Relationships: Support Business Development and Delivery in building and retaining strong relationships with customers, partners and colleagues across all levels, both business and technical.
  3. Leadership: Lead a team of technical SME’s and engineers from across the company in Land focussed proposition development and strategic captures.
  4. Proposition Development: Form a network of Land, RAS, HMT & Mission System Integration experts (both internally and externally) and work with them to develop the solution and service propositions (including identifying synergies between them across customers and geographies).
  5. Customer Engagement: Lead customer engagement across all levels acting as the technical and solution developer to support shaping customer requirements and priorities, then applying appropriate capabilities to fulfil them.
  6. Business Development: Support Business Development leads in the oversight of solution design that drives development of business with new types of solutions and with new customers.
  7. Capability Development: Works with the Capability Area Leaders to identify the capabilities required to deliver Land strategic propositions. This includes how new capabilities such as Naimuri can be applied, as well as identifying and on-boarding partners
  8. Thought Leadership: Leads on development of internal strategic proposition, published white papers and other thought leadership material. 



  • Ability to go beyond powerpoint and transform the vision into a deliverable proposition
  • Definition of the “how” and the “who” below the strategic proposition and the growth vision statement
  • Demonstrable success in developing Investment business case proposition and delivery
  • Leadership of diverse technical teams, providing clear direction to ensure alignment and effective collaboration
  • Strong commercial awareness with good knowledge of how propositions contribute to the business.
  • Experienced in selling propositions, including producing high quality bid response material and proposals, as well as leading workshops and presenting to all levels of the customer as required.
  • Evidence of building repeatable customer solutions/services that deliver profitable growth
  • Able to identify and articulate the unique selling points of QinetiQ propositions alongside a clear value proposition, ensuring they are differentiated from those of competitors.
  • Ability to “get stuff done”: work through blockers, help the teamwork through issues and ensure that support is directed to the people who need it (i.e. be able to quickly understand issues and identify the high-risk areas and work to mitigate).
  • Has proven experience operating in a Solution Architect/Technical Leader role, at a senior level, influencing and delivering key propositions to customers. This ranges across not only larger deals (£10M+) but also those which are smaller yet strategically important.
  • Specific prior experience in land domain activities are essential – experience in the Army as a staff officer in a trials establishment or Cap Futures directorate is desirable but not essential.
  • Depth of understanding of architectures, experimentation and autonomy.
