Senior Naval Architect


The Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering (NAME) group sits within the Maritime and Land business of QinetiQ and consists a team of over 40 people. The team delivers hydrodynamic testing and design consultancy services. Hydrodynamic problem-solving forms a significant part of the project work within group – identifying a methodology for solving a client’s hydrodynamic issues, mathematically or through model testing.


We are looking for a Senior Naval Architect to join our technical team. The role requires an excellent understanding of Naval Architecture principles and the ability to use that knowledge together with sound engineering judgement to solve our customer’s important problems. In particular, knowledge of the methods and tools used within hydrodynamic design and assessment is desirable. Practicing knowledge of propeller or propulsor design and assessment would also be beneficial.

  • Good team working, organisation, communication and attention to detail.

The Role 

The primary focus of the job will be the delivery of technical projects relating to surface ship and submarine hydrodynamic subject areas. The likely areas of interest include propulsor and propeller design, dynamic stability, quasi-static stability, seakeeping, resistance and propulsion. The work will include use of QinetiQ’s hydrodynamic facilities and industry standard or bespoke numerical simulation tools.


The role requires presenting work in internal and external forums, including conferences and in customer meetings. Participation in business support activities will also be required including bidding and planning activities through the provision of task estimates and breakdowns of task descriptions.


Key Accountabilities


  • Working collaboratively with customers and colleagues to deliver ensure the customers’ requirements are and providing innovative solutions to customers’ problems.
  • Able to breakdown complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work. This will include being customer facing and supervision of others.
  • Ensure the work is conducted in a safe manner, highlighting hazards and potentially unsafe practices to Team Lead.


Eligibility Requirements


Current SC Clearance is desirable, must be willing and eligible to undergo clearance upon staring. To gain SC clearance 5 years' consecutive UK residencey is usually required.
