The Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering (NAME) group sits within the Maritime and Land business of QinetiQ and consists a team of over 40 people. The team delivers hydrodynamic testing and design consultancy services. Hydrodynamic problem solving forms a significant part of the project work within group – identifying a methodology for solving a client’s hydrodynamic issues, mathematically or through model testing.

We are looking for a Senior Naval Architect to join our technical team. The role requires an excellent understanding of Engineering principals and the ability to use that knowledge together with sound engineering judgement to solve our customer’s important problems.

In particular, the following knowledge are desirable (do not have to have competence in all three):

  • Submarine systems, in particular those relating to manoeuvring and ballasting performance
  • Submarine manoeuvring operating envelopes
  • Requirements capture and management through life

Other key skills/traits we are looking for are:

  1. Highly motivated, dynamic with a positive attitude and values of integrity, collaboration and performance.
  2. Keen desire to develop and grown their technical skills and understanding.
  3. Good knowledge of data analysis including experience of programming (Matlab, Python etc.).
  4. Ability to develop alternative strategies to overcome issues and innovate to improve the overall value to the customer.
  5. Good communication skills, both written and presentational. Including the ability to exchange complex information.
  6. Good team working, organisation, communication and attention to detail.

The primary focus of the job will be the delivery of technical projects relating to submarine hydrodynamic subject areas. However, other areas where the candidate may be required to work includes propulsor and propeller design, dynamic stability, quasi-static stability, seakeeping, resistance and propulsion. The work will include use of QinetiQ’s hydrodynamic facilities and industry standard or bespoke numerical simulation tools.

The role requires presenting work in internal and external forums, including conferences and in customer meetings. Participation in business support activities will also be required including bidding and planning activities through the provision of task estimates and breakdowns of task descriptions.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Working collaboratively with customers and colleagues to deliver ensure the customers’ requirements are and providing innovative solutions to customers’ problems.
  2. Able to breakdown complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work. This will include being customer facing and supervision of others.
  3. Ensure the work is conducted in a safe manner, highlighting hazards and potentially unsafe practices to Team Lead.
  4. Actively participate and encourage increased collaboration across the NAME Group.

The applicant would ideally have a in BEng / MEng in Naval Architecture or equivalent and be a Chartered Engineer.
