Key Accountabilities:


  1. Planning technical activities, including:
  1. Detailed analysis of the activity requirements to ensure that the project has a firm basis of understanding.
  2. Liaising with the customer technical lead to ensure that their requirements are fully understood
  3. Identifying any key constraints, including external standards / legislative requirements
  4. Identifying any safety and security issues, and ensure plan addresses them
  5. Dividing the activity into a logical set of tasks, organised into a coherent Work Breakdown Structure
  6. Create a set of roles and responsibilities need to deliver the project, including specialist roles such as SDA, Safety lead, Test Lead, Quality Manager, Config Manager as required.
  7. Decomposing each task into a set of linked sub-tasks, each of which has:
    1. Start date
    2. Duration
    3. Resources needed
    4. Dependencies
    5. Outputs and success /  acceptance criteria
    6. Identification of the risks associated with each task, their mitigations and residual risks
    7. Identification of the opportunities associated with each task, their mitigations and residual risks
  8. Ensuring that appropriate engineering plans (TDP, SEMP, Software Development Management Plan, ITEA Plans, etc.) are created to an appropriate standard
  9. If developing a product, ensure that Design Certification and CofCs are created.


  1. Oversight of technical delivery, including:
    1. Working alongside the project/programme manager to ensure successful delivery
    2. Leading the delivery team, acting as a coordinator and facilitator, supporting and guiding the team members.
    3. Ensuring that the project and programme managers are fully informed of technical progress and issues
    4. Liaising with the customer technical lead to ensure that they are fully informed of progress and issues.
    5. Creating technical progress reports, in the form most appropriate for the activity
    6. Ensuring that the technical tasks are conducted according to the plan
    7. Ensuring the end deliverables meet customer specification and quality expectations
    8. Ensuring that safety and security is properly maintained and legislation is complied with, including conduct of Hazardous Activities Management processes where necessary
    9. Ensuring that the necessary artefacts and documentation are created and controlled
    10. Ensuring that issues are identified and recorded immediately
    11. Ensuring that the risk and opportunity plan is kept up-to-date
    12. Ensuring that appropriate engineering plans (SEMP, Software Development Management Plan, ITEA Plans, etc) are fully populated and maintained


  1. Technical assurance within the project, including:
    1. Creation of a technical delivery plan
    2. Identification of assurance events within that plan that will ensure that appropriate artefacts are created that demonstrate that the activity is delivering to appropriate delivery standards and within the agreed risk profile
    3. Support to the allocated  technical assurance lead, and support to scheduled IAR reviews


  1. Technical aspects of project closure, including:
    1. Proper archiving of documentation
    2. Proper arrangements to store engineering artefacts
    3. Timely conduct of a technical lessons learned review

You will be passionate about working closely with your customers and keeping the UK safe. You may have a degree that may be in a related field. You might not, but might instead demonstrate how you have trodden the path for yourself and gained the skills and experience required to be successful in this role. We would expect you to have experience in most, but not all of the key capabilities.
