Date: 11-May-2021

Location: Malvern, England, GB

Company: QinetiQ

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)

QinetiQ has several business areas including Cyber and Information, and Maritime which exploit capabilities and developments in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and we are looking to further expand and strengthen this capability.

MBSE is increasingly used in support of QinetiQ’s Systems Engineering capability.  We apply a range of approaches ranging from the application of commercial industry-standard off-the-shelf tools and techniques to more bespoke products depending upon the domain of application and problem being addressed.  These approaches are already applied to areas including requirements engineering, architecting and design, and also to downstream activities including integration and test.  Our capability includes a growing cadre of experts and practitioners in this important area.  We are seeking to expand this capability by adding further staff with skills, experience and knowledge of MBSE and its application to relevant domains.

Typical roles entail working for a technical lead experienced in the application domain (for the larger projects) and working alongside fellow systems engineers, MBSE practitioners and domain subject matter experts.  For smaller projects the MBSE systems engineer may work alone but with the ability to draw upon guidance and support from fellow practitioners within the discipline.

Specific MBSE Key Activities:

  • Provide technical advice or support into projects throughout the engineering lifecycle in support of existing or future systems or processes.
  • Application of systems engineering tools, techniques and notations to the requirements engineering, architecting and design of systems e.g. DOORS, MooD, Sparx EA, Agile SE, MDA, OOSEM, TOGAF, ArchiMate, UML, SysML
  • Awareness of the use of architecture description frameworks such as MODAF, NAF and UAF
  • Awareness of relevant systems engineering standards such as ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010/20/30 and/or defence standards
  • Deliver support to equipment delivery programmes, through user workshop engagements, and advise on process change and management to enhance capability and/or reduce operator burden, operational risk and/or reduce through life costs.
  • Support planning, management, delivery and reporting.
  • Engage with stakeholders, project managers and senior technical staff to ensure customer and business needs are satisfied appropriately and problems are mitigated.

Particular skills/experience required:

  • Experience in application of MBSE tools.
  • Experience in application of MBSE techniques.
  • Experience in application of MBSE notations.
  • Awareness of the use of architecture description frameworks.
  • Awareness of technical issues relating to MBSE including configuration control, tool and method integration
  • Flexible approach to tasking, able to take on multiple projects or tasks in potentially a variety of stages of development i.e. concept development, requirements capture, design, delivery, verification and validation.
  • Ability to work in a team or individually as part of a Prime or Sub-contract in an industry partnership project team.
  • Be prepared to travel to customer and QinetiQ sites on a frequent basis to support project delivery (different roles will require varying amounts of UK travel to be undertaken).
  • Hold SC clearances or be prepared to go through Government Vetting process.
