We are looking for an experienced Electrical/Electronics/Mechatronics Engineer to join our Integrated Engineering Services Division based in Port Melbourne.

 

As an Electrical/Electronics/Mechatronics Engineer, the role will see you leading all aspects of the control, data acquisition, and instrumentation systems for one of our customers Wind Tunnel facilities, under limited guidance from the facility manager.

 

The duties of this position include the following items (but are not limited to) across a variety of different projects in a Defence R&D environment including;

  • Sustain and develop hardware and software systems relating to the instrumentation, control and data acquisition systems and associated signal conditioning to ensure TWT facility capability test readiness, ensuring compliance to codes and standards.
    • Developing, reviewing, maintaining, and diagnosing control system software in PLC ladder logic, function block, SCADA/HMI programming.
    • Developing, reviewing, maintaining, and diagnosing interfaces to facility equipment using hardwired interfaces and industrial networks, ensuring compliance to codes and standards.
    • Leading control and data acquisition projects through all phases to include design, fabrication, implementation, testing and commissioning.
  • Manage asset/inventory management of instrumentation and related equipment holdings ensuring accurate documentation and database / registry entries, maintaining instrumentation equipment in a state of readiness to support test programs.
  • Assume responsibility for calibration program requirements, planning and coordinating the calibration schedule, facilitating communication with the experimental aerodynamics team, and ensuring effective documentation records for audit purposes are maintained
  • Support the TWT facility manager in sustainment and development of the wind tunnel capability, including safety and security management.
  • Calibrate (or organise calibration of) strain gauge balances, pressure transducers, transmitters, temperature transmitters, load cells, gas analysers, and handheld/bench top test instruments.
  • Support general maintenance of wind tunnel plant control systems and instrumentation
  • Prepare, integrate and check-out test instrumentation and equipment in readiness for wind tunnel tests, including assisting with installing/dismantling of wind tunnel models
  • Operate the TWT during test campaigns and maintenance activities, including lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of associated control system or instrumentation issues to minimise lost time
  • Procurement support to acquire equipment required for facility development, sustainment, and test campaigns
  • Investigate, evaluate, report, and make recommendations on new data system and control system technologies to enhance wind tunnel test capabilities
  • Maintain technical expertise in all data and controls system computer hardware, software, interconnection, and interfacing

 

To be successful for the position, you will need to bring with you;

  • Degree in electronics, mechatronics, electrical, or related discipline
  • Ability to embrace challenges with energy and enthusiasm
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge and understanding of instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems
  • Prior experience with wind tunnels and test and evaluation is very desirable but not essential
  • Strong interpersonal skills, along with effective written and verbal communication
  • Ability to take initiative and self-direct, with an innovative approach to problem solving
  • Be able to communicate effectively with stakeholders, determine their requirements, and to develop strategies to deliver agreed outcomes
  • Experience in the application of quality management, safety management, and risk management systems is desirable
