The team at QinetiQ Australia are seeking a Principle Electrical Engineer, specialising in Low Voltage (LV) Electrical Engineering including LV Distribution System Design and LV Distribution Board Design.


Located in Port Melbourne at a newly fitted out development, prototyping and engineering facility that is focused on research, innovation and product engineering.  This opportunity will see you perform engineering and design development work helping to develop new products for Defence and other key markets.  This is a role for people who not only have the technical skills and knowledge required but who also want to see innovation be translated into real world capability solutions and products.  We want people who can lead the way and who can help us grow our capability into something that is industry leading.


As a Principle Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for;

  • Development of LV electrical power generation, distribution and energy storage products for Defence applications.
  • Design of LV electrical systems as per the requirements and safety regulations.
  • Development of documentation for design validation and qualification.
  • System requirements and specifications.
  • Communicate and advise on issues regarding project scope, methods, complexity and risks.
  • Work collaboratively with other technical disciplines to ensure overall system requirements are achieved
  • Development of basic drawings, electrical schematics and other technical documentation.
  • Solve complex problems often requiring a new perspective but using existing solutions from a wide range of engineering disciplines.
  • Contribute to process improvements within the area and domain by using best practice and knowledge of internal and external business issues to improve products/services or processes
  • Comprehensive understanding of how the teams collectively integrate within the domain to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
  • Research customer’s needs and requirements to align outputs; gaining greater skills in dealing with customers and identifying new business.
  • Advises the client regarding project scope, methods, complexity and risks.
  • Development of the system requirements and specifications
  • Technical management of multiple design projects
  • Creating and/or assisting with cost estimates for new products and services


To be successful in the role of Principle Electrical Engineer, you will need to bring with you;

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Product development experience and previous employment in Defence or Defence industry will be highly valued
  • Industrial electrical experience with generators, LV distribution systems, switch board design, and industrial control and communications systems
  • Experience with portable power platforms (batteries/solar/generators)
  • Experience with micro-grids will be highly valued
  • Experience with wiring design and drawings
  • Experience in developing schematics
  • Knowledge of Wiring and Equipment standards
  • Knowledge of electrical cabinet and cable design
  • Computer proficiency (Document Management Software, MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook) Additional desirable assets would include:
  • Experience with CAD software packages
  • Altium, Electra experience or simular schematics software packages
  • Technical writing including Technical Report writing
  • Conduct minor electrical fabrication ( fault finding to component level)
  • Knowledge of System Engineering will be valued
  • The applicant will need to be self-motivated, have an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset and be willing to take on and deliver new and challenging design tasks. This will require a commitment to ongoing learning
