The Naval Combat Systems Integration Support Service (NCSISS) delivers the necessary integration, test, evaluation, and acceptance activities across all phases of the equipment lifecycle to support the development and delivery of operationally effective and safe Combat System (CS) capability. It enables MOD and industry to make informed decisions based on objective, credible evidence that is generated by experts in an environment which is free from supply chain conflict of interest.
The Role
As a Senior Combat System Engineer you will operate within a team of engineers to deliver the NCSISS contract. You will be required to conduct activities to ensure a consistent approach to the design, delivery and support of our products and advice in accordance with a through life management plan. You will have responsibility for delivering specific, delegated project tasks, and will support Customer engagement to understand their aspirations with respect to capability, elicit and understand their requirements, support the process of analysis and decomposition of the requirements
Accountabilities of the Senior Combat System Engineer
- Leads on relevant technical matters relating to Tactical Data Links
- Engaging with customers, other stakeholders, and suppliers.
- As required, leads a technical team in support of project objectives and contract deliverables in accordance with the through life management plan
- Oversee the production of technical documentation (including Body of Evidence for Certificate of Safe Integration) in support of work carried out.
- Delivers work and reports on progress to the NCSISS Technical Lead and project staff, escalating problems and issues encountered
- Leads the delivery of delegated projects.
This role is full time, 37 hours per week and based at Portsdown Technology Park (PTP), with a hybrid working from home arrangment.
We are looking for an individual able to work in a combined military and civilian team environment predominantly at PTP, however travel to other locations in the UK and abroad to support external supplier testing and trials will also be necessary. There may also be the requirement to support sea going trials on board Royal Navy platforms.
Essential experience of the Senior Combat System Engineer
- Significant relevant experience in engineering or systems engineering
- Proven experience on Naval Combat Systems and Combat system equipment with particular experience in the Tactical Data Link equipment area
- Modern Integration skills
- Desirable knowledge (but not essential) in Sensor Systems including Radar and Sonar, Geospatial referencing, Communications and Command Systems, Weapon Systems
- Able to communicate and present technical issues in a clear and understanding manner
- Able to resolve issues.
Qualifications for the Senior Combat System Engineer
- HND Level qualification (or equivalent)
- CEng (or equivalent)/ willingness to work towards

About NCSISS
NCSISS is delivered collaboratively by QinetiQ with its partner BAE Systems. QinetiQ’s NCSISS capability is based at its Portsdown Technology Park (PTP) site where most staff are based. It is supported by further staff based at its Bristol site, which is close to DE&S Abbey Wood, and by certain other specialist staff at its other sites. PTP hosts various facilities which are representative of key Royal Navy (RN) naval Combat Systems and their constituent equipment and which allow defect resolution, design support, integration, test and evaluation, acceptance and interoperability activities to be undertaken.
