We are looking for a positive and enthusiastic Principal Mechanical Test Engineer to join a high performing team of multi-disciplinary structural engineers, including subject matter experts in delivering critical test & evaluation of complex maritime structures delivering mission critical solutions for our customers in commercial and defence sectors in the UK and worldwide.,
The role
As a Principal Mechanical Test Engineer you will work alongside engineers to deliver testing of submarine and surface ship structures, assessing their performance within the demanding environments that the platforms will be subjected to throughout their operational life. You will also support other members of the team in the field of Structural Analysis and Non-Destructive Evaluation.
Day to day you will:
- Act as the overall technical lead/project manager being responsible for time, cost and quality of team and individual work.
- Responsible for the production of timely and proactive engineering outputs, through attending and contributing to meetings and other communication methods, both formal and informal, as required.
- Responsible for the definition and delivery of technical work plans, resources and tasks, working with the project manager on schedule, budget, risks, dependencies and constraints.
- Ensure effective governance to demonstrate that the technical solution meets appropriate regulatory, legal, safety and engineering standards.
- Fully capture and understand the customers’ requirements and providing innovative solutions to customers’ problems.
- Lead bidding activities.
This is a full-time role, base at our Rosyth site, near Edinburgh.
Skills and Experience of the Principal Mechanical Test Engineer
- Significant, demonstrable experience in a relevant engineering role
- Fatigue Analysis and testing
- Expert level Understanding of structural fatigue and fracture mechanics
- Materials testing including data collection and analysis
- Good Understanding of welding processes and metallurgical failure analysis
- Understanding of maritime construction materials and maritime structures
- Understanding of Non-Destructive Evaluation techniques and how data obtained from NDE can influence maritime structural requirements
- Knowledge of scripting or a programming language such as Python (desirable)
- Knowledge of performance capabilities of a variety or Royal Navy Platforms (desirable)
Qualifications for the Principal Mechanical Test Engineer
- Degree level qualification or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or other suitable discipline
- Membership of relevant professional engineering institution at Chartered level or commitment to achieve membership at Chartered level.
