The role
As a Communications Engineer, you’ll have a role that is out of the ordinary, working as part of a team to support design, implement and deliver new systems and solutions. You will be expected to undertake tasks of increasing complexity, requiring the ability to consider the problem, derive a range of potential solutions and decide on the best course of action to reach a cost effective outcome, with little or no supervision. You will be required to take a proactive approach to customer relationships, the adoption of standards, internal processes, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, and the management of work within a team context.

 

Accountabilities of the Communications Engineer

  • Technically lead small projects or parts of larger projects through managing a small technical team to deliver solutions using best practice.
  • Deliver quality technical outputs to time and budget for programme, project and bidding activities and provide estimation of effort required for medium/large tasks
  • Undertake tasks of increasing complexity through the derivation of solutions using existing practises, identifying problems and providing pragmatic solutions
  • Provide new perspectives, challenge existing solutions for new tasks and contribute to process improvements
  • Provide mentoring support to junior colleagues
  • Supporting technical aspects of proposals

 

This role is full-time, based at our Malvern site; arrangements in line with our adaptive working policy.

 

Essential experience of the Communications Engineer

  • Experience of working with a broad and comprehensive range of concepts and principles within the areas of resilient RF communications.
  • Understanding of RF propagation in both LOS and BLOS environments and the physical layer elements of the system relating to key performance attributes e.g. antennas, spectrum access, modulation and coding.
  • Ideally awareness of military Comms systems including Bowman and/or Skynet5/6.
  • Ability to use modelling, software and operational analyses techniques to formulate a problem and provide analysis and conclusions.
  • Knowledge of Line of Sight (LOS) and Beyond Line Of Sight (BLOS) systems including:
    • HF (2G/3G and 4G)
    • VHF Combat Net Radio
    • UHF wideband  including Mobile Adhoc NETworks (MANET)
    • Satellite Communications (SATCOM) including Mil Sat/Civ Sat LEO MEO and GEO constellation services
    • 802.11 WiFi based solutions including ad and ay 60 GHz
  • Experience of giving customer advice through written reports and presentations

 

Qualifications for the Communications Engineer
A first degree in Science or Engineering, or an equivalent, nationally recognised, professional qualification, with relevant on the job experience and growth of key skills, working in the domain and backed up with a tangible track record of achievement.
