Opportunities to join the RF Science Team

Date: 25 Apr 2024

Location: Farnborough, England, GB

Company: QinetiQ

QinetiQ is developing at an incredible pace year on year and we’re not slowing down. We are constantly on the lookout for enthusiastic, dynamic, talented and motivated individuals to join our Radio Frequency (RF) Signatures Team with QinetiQ’s UK Defence division. We are looking for physicists and engineers who are keen to explore the physics of the RF spectrum.

We share and support UK Defence’s commitment to growing and improving the UK’s military capability. Our work is innovative, varied, often unique, exciting and critical. We work closely with the most advanced Defence manufacturers.

We are currently recruiting for Junior and Mid-Level Researchers/Scientists/Engineer to join our RF Signatures Teams in Farnborough and Malvern.

This unique opportunity will offer the successful candidates the opportunity to work across the entire electromagnetic solution development process, assisting in the development and deployment of novel technology solutions: from material and circuit concept development and simulation, to fabrication, measurement and analysis of solutions. We currently have opportunities across our Farnborough and Malvern sites. If you’re interested in joining us in providing world-class technical solutions to solve complex challenges in disciplines including the application of electromagnetic theory, material design & characterisation and RF measurement techniques. We would love to hear from you!

What does the RF signatures team do?

Wireless trend demands radiofrequency innovation – Physics World

RF specialists at QinetiQ use a combination of lab-based testing, numerical analysis and experimentation to understand and exploit the properties of radio waves. QinetiQ’s activities extend across the full range of radio frequencies and signal strengths, ranging from the low-power radio waves typically used for navigation and communications systems through to defensive platforms that exploit high-power electromagnetic beams to disable electronics and explosive devices, or to disrupt fast-moving vehicles such as drones.

The work undertaken by the RF signatures team focusses on the control of electromagnetic propagation and scatter to manipulate the signatures of existing and future structures, providing benefits such as signature reduction to minimise interference with radar systems or to enhance or direct signals towards a specific target receiver. For example, one of the materials developed by the team has been successfully applied to wind turbines to reduce their signature by up to 99%, reducing the impact of their interference with weather radar systems. Services provided by the team include:

  • The interpretation and application of electromagnetic theory to aid the development of future materials and measurement capabilities.
  • The design, fabrication and evaluation of novel materials and devices for signature management.
  • The measurement and characterisation of RF signatures for a range of target sizes and specifications.

What is the scope of opportunities?

The group is experienced in the development and characterisation of innovative electromagnetic propagation and scattering control solutions across a number of different industries, both within the defence community and commercially, such as for renewable energy an successful applicants will be responsible for the delivery of our exciting and engaging technical projects alongside our existing UK-leading experts in RF/Microwave bands of the electromagnetic spectrum , using our exceptional range of RF measurement facilities to deliver novel, cutting edge technical solutions and products. The role will also offer opportunities to develop skills such as technical leadership, development and bidding of future project opportunities, and technical mentorship.

Junior level Researchers – RF Signatures

  • A degree ideally a first in a topic area relevant to electromagnetics.
  • An understanding of electromagnetic theory (fields and waves, propagation and scattering), either through relevant courses or experience.
  • Be competent in the use of data management and analysis software, such as Matlab or R.
  • An understanding of electromagnetic modelling software tools, for example CST microwave studio or COMSOL Multi-physics.

Mid-Level Researchers – RF Signatures

In addition to the above you will need to satisfy the following requirements

  • Eithera PhD or equivalent associated experience in the field of electromagnetics.
  • Have a working knowledge of electromagnetic modelling software tools, for example CST microwave studio or COMSOL Multiphysics.
  • Desirable – experience in leading technical projects, including the mentoring of junior staff members.
  • Desirable – a track record in the technical delivery of scientific research in a relevant field, particularly with respect to electromagnetic measurements.
