We are seeking talented Technical Leads to join our Sythetic Environments and Simulation team, a vibrant group of engineers from a range of scientific, mathematical and creative backgrounds. As part of our continued focus and investment in Training and Mission Rehearsal, we are looking for individuals who can provide subject matter expertise and/or lead the delivery of technical and engineering output across a range of customer projects, internal investments or strategic captures.

The Role
As Technical Lead for Systems Engineering & Simulation, you will bring together technical solutions following best practice through the engineering lifecycle. You may operate at whole system level, working with customers on use cases and context of use, requirements, project engineering and technical assurance plans; or work in a particular sector of the delivery lifecycle, such as design, integration, test, in-service or through life support. You may be looking at one or more of overall architecture, requirements, use cases, work structure, sub/system specifications/integration, statements of work for partners, interface definition, design traceability, test, verification and certification.

 

  • Technically leading contracted projects or programmes, providing specialism where this fits your experience, and coordinating a larger team.
  • Liaising with customers at a technical level to enhance our understanding of their requirements. Supporting customer’s understanding and developing their requirements.
  • Managing the technical risk and opportunities on behalf of the project
  • Ensuring that the technical tasks are conducted according to the plan
  • Ensuring the end deliverables meet customer specification and quality expectations
  • Ensuring that the project and programme managers are fully informed of technical progress and issues
  • Liaising with the customer technical lead to ensure that they are fully informed of progress and issues

 

This role is full time, 37 hours per week, and based at our Farnborough site with agile working options, including flexible start and finish times, home working, compressed hours and flexible breaks.


Skills and experience of the Technical Lead for Systems Engineering & Simulation
A broad understanding of modelling and simulation concepts and technologies; likely to have an interest in simulation or gaming, MOD training, rehearsal or experimentation. Ability to rapidly assimilate knowledge of relevant technology solutions and system considerations when integrated together into an overall capability. This might include knowledge and skills in some of the following areas:

 

  • Simulator interoperability standards including Distributed and federated simulation (DIS).
  • Tactical environment simulation, including knowledge and understanding of threat representation or environment modelling and associated tools/ technologies such as Image Generation and visualisation of tactical or geospatial information. Experience with games engines such as VBS or Unity may be beneficial.
  • Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) blends. Concepts and principles underpinning LVC systems for Operational Training or Test & Evaluation, including awareness of how simulations can safely and effectively interact with operational communications, command and control systems.
  • Future and emerging technologies: Awareness of future technology trends, able to explore new concepts through technology-based research, and able to create appropriate solutions using novel and emerging technologies that meet future capability requirements.
  • Leadership of technical delivery projects throughout the engineering lifecycle requiring delivery of complex solutions to a range of customers
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels across the department, business, and externally with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists and a broad range of internal and external stakeholders whilst building and maintaining excellent relationships
  • Experience of writing/contributing to technical documentation and experience of using system engineering methodologies.

 

Essential Qualifications for the Technical Lead for Systems Engineering & Simulation
A degree in Science or Engineering, or an equivalent nationally recognised, professional qualification, with further on the job experience and growth of key skills, working in the domain and backed up with a tangible track record of achievement. Holders will be expected to have fulfilled the requirements to attain full professional membership of a relevant body or similar accreditation. Candidates may have a background in Systems Engineering, Systems Integration or Software Engineering.

 

Demonstrable success shaping and delivering solutions that require technical leadership and risk management across a range of engineering and technical disciplines, particularly where they have involved development of simulations and synthetic environments for training, research or decision support.

 

Experience identifying and managing technical risk as well as awareness of wider considerations for bidding and project delivery, such as commercial, financial, security and intellectual property.
